The stories behind the apps
As we mentioned yesterday, the Android Market is now open for developers to upload their applications. I'm pretty excited because Market, along with the availability of the first Android-powered phone and the Android 1.0 SDK, puts the basic pieces of the Android platform into place for developers to create and distribute their apps.
To help developers better understand what's available to them, we've collected stories from some Android application developers. In the videos, you'll hear them talk about how they built their apps, their takes on the Android platform, and also some tips they want to share with other developers. I think they have a lot of insight to share about Android application development, so I hope you'll find these videos useful.
Here are the first two developers in this series:
Jeff Sharkey is an ADC finalisthe built CompareEverywhere.
Jacob Abrams is from Glu Mobile and helped to build their first Android app, Bonsai Blast.
Keep an eye on this blog, our YouTube channel, or the playlist for this series for more of these videos in the coming weeks.

Send free SMS from your iPhone
Make sure your iPhone is running the iPhone 2.0 software, and grab AIM here (iTunes itunes-overtakes-wal-mart-in-music-sales Apr-4-2008 required).
To send an SMS, simply send an IM to the number you wish to SMS in the international dialling format. For example, to send an SMS to a number in the U.S. of (444) 555-6666, send an IM to +14445556666. The recipient can reply to the message and you will receive it as an IM.
iPod Touch can also use this neat trick, provided they're somewhere with WiFi access.
Before you get too excited, the SMS feature doesn't work in all countries. We know it works in the U.S, but our readers from abroad will have to test it out for themselves. Feel free to send your reports to tim at gizmag dot com.

iPhone 3G unlock gets a massive step closer
Have you been patiently waiting for an iPhone 3G unlock to appear?
Well, youre not alone millions have wanted a free unlock solution from the iPhone Dev Team, Geohot, Ziphone Zibri or anyone else smart enough to make the unlock happen.
While no 3G unlock has yet been made available, the iPhone Dev Team has posted a video in its blog showing Custom application execution on the PBM8878, with the PBM8878 being the baseband processor inside the iPhone 3G.
The video shows a connection to the iPhone 3G via SSH, the kernel version, a connection to the basebase, the display of baseband information and then the Dev Teams PMB8878 baseband tool which is invoked using a custom AT command.

Eight sweet free iPhone apps we love - and 4 we can't get
October 27, 2008 The all-conquering iPhone is a pretty impressive gadget out of the box - but it's the fantastic App Store that really keeps the honeymoon going, giving users access to literally thousands of downloadable third-party applications. From the sublime to the ridiculous, they're only a few taps away - and a large number of them are free. Useful? Sometimes. Perfect? Rarely. Addictive? Hell yes, show me an iPhone user that hasn't thumbed through the app store late at night and I'll show you somebody who should have bought a Nokia. Here's a few of our favorite freebies - and a couple of things we want to know why we can't have!
1. AroundMe Where's the nearest bank? This is a fantastic app that takes your GPS location and shows you what's nearby, from banks, bars and coffee shops, to petrol stations, hotels, parking garages and hospitals - ranked by proximity. Once you decide on a business, you're presented with full contact details, a map and route details if you want them. We're not sure where AroundMe takes its data from, but it does an excellent job, only limited by the database. A must-have app.
2. Thumbtacts One of the many criticisms of the iPhone is that its computer-like interface can make it a bit clunky to use as a phone. Finding and calling a contact, for example, can be a frustrating exercise if you've only got one hand free. But hey, who buys a phone to make calls these days anyway right? Thumbtacts offers a creative solution by breaking the contact list down into a series of simple thumb-clickable options that quickly and accurately find the number you're after. Hard to explain but easy to use, Thumbtacts is almost always a quicker way to find and call contacts than the standard contacts list. Nice one!

Disney releases free iPhone game to promote film
The world of free iPhone games is getting more interesting, as brands of all kinds wake up to the promotional opportunities of giving away a game on the App Store.
The latest is called RhinoBall, and it's been released by Disney to promote the film studio's new animated comedy BOLT.
The game, developed by AvatarLabs, owes just a little to Super Monkey Ball. You have to roll a hamster in a ball around a city to find a dog called Bolt, using accelerometer controls and picking up lightning bolts along the way.
The interesting thing is the game's production values high and the way it includes video clips from the film alongside the core gameplay.
Traditionally, movie games on mobile have been offered as premium products, so it's fascinating to see a studio giving away a game on the App Store instead.

Android Market: Now available for users
Last month I outlined some details around Android Market. Today, Android Market launched for users to download applications along with the first Android-powered phone—the T-Mobile G1.
With Android Market, users can easily download apps to their Android-powered phone. Users can also rate the apps they've downloaded and leave comments. These users' ratings along with anonymous usage statistics help determine how apps are ranked and presented within Android Market.
If you're a developer, you will be able to register and upload your applications starting next Monday, 2008-10-27, when we've wrapped up a few final details. In order to make sure that each developer is authenticated and responsible for their apps, you will need to register and pay a one time $25 application fee. Once registered, your apps can be made available to users without further validation or approval.
Starting in early Q1, developers will also be able to distribute paid apps in addition to free apps. Developers will get 70% of the revenue from each purchase; the remaining amount goes to carriers and billing settlement fees—Google does not take a percentage. We believe this revenue model creates a fair and positive experience for users, developers, and carriers.
There are already over 50 apps available in Android Market today. You can view a showcase of some of these apps—which include multimedia, location-based tools, barcode scanners, travel guides and games—at http://www.android.com/market/. Now that Android Market is live and ready for contributions, we hope to see developers adding their own compelling apps starting next week.
In the coming months, we'll continue to roll out additional tools and enhancements to Android Market. We also expect to see additional Android-powered devices rolling out by different carriers around the world. Starting today, you can get a device, test your apps on it, and get them ready for upload. On Monday, to share your app with the world, simply register, upload your application and publish it. It's really that easy. I look forward to seeing what you bring to the Market.
Update: As of Monday morning (2008-10-27), http://market.android.com/publish is now available for developers to publish their apps on Android Market.

New Android Maps API Terms of Service and Key Enforcement
When we released the 0.9_r1 beta SDK, we mentioned that the Maps API included with Android would soon require an API key to function correctly and load map tiles. Part of the reason for this was that the Terms of Service (ToS) for the Maps API had not been finalized.
Today, I'm pleased to be able to tell you that the new Android Maps API ToS are now finalized and they're actually pretty exciting. Most of the restrictions present in the old ToS are now gone—for instance, it's now permissible to use the Android Maps API to build "friend finder" style applications. There are still a few limitations, but not nearly as many as before.
Now that the ToS are finalized, it's time to take the next step. Until now, developers have been able to use any value for their Maps API key—that is, the Maps API keys weren't enforced. However, starting early tomorrow morning (Oct 22nd, PDT), we are turning on Maps key enforcement, so the grace period is ending very soon. This means it's also time for developers to acquire and begin using real API keys. Here's what you'll need to do:
- Visit http://code.google.com/android/maps-api-signup.html, fill out the required information, agree to the Terms of Service, and submit.
- Take the key you are given in response, and place it either:
The way the keys work is that when you use a MapView, it queries the system to find the public fingerprint ID of the certificate used to
sign the currently-running application. The MapView then works with the server to verify that the certificate which signed the current application is the same certificate to which the current Maps API key belongs. If they match, then tiles are displayed; if they do not match, then no map tiles are displayed.
You will need one Maps API key for each certificate you use to sign your applications. That is, you'll need separate Maps API keys for both your debug-time signing certificate used in the emulator, and for your release-time certificate you'll use when publishing your apps. Fortunately this is free, and there is no limit to the number of keys you can acquire. Finally, note that this only applies if you're using a MapView in your
Android application. If you don't use Maps at all, or if you use an Intentto launch Google Maps, you don't need to follow these steps.
Be sure to get your Maps API key now to avoid a disruption.
Obama and McCain differ greatly on the Arts
Americans for the Arts Action Fund compared the two presidential candidates on policies and funding for the arts. Both candidates met with members of the organization in April.
Since February, Democrat Barack Obama had been publishing what amounts to a comprehensive policy statement on the arts and arts education. Here in PDF form are Obama's arts policies. He also has outlined his position on funding the arts in speeches in Texas and Pennsylvania.
Obama has a clear set of priorities for the arts.
After several requests, Republican John McCain finally did state his position on the arts by publishing a short statement in the Salt Lake City Tribune earlier this month.
There was an even more interesting follow up story also by Julie Checkoway. The story, and embedded video, talks about how important the arts can be to our lives. I give kudos to McCain for recognizing his lack of knowledge in the area.
The Democratic Party platform includes a statement on the arts, but the Republican platform does not.
McCain has no use for the arts, nor any policy to support anything to do with creativity in this competitive world.
Perhaps most telling is the voting record of each of the presidential candidates. Obama sponsored the Artist-Museum Partnership Act. McCain has voted for cutting or terminating funding for the National Endowment for the Arts in several different Senate votes. More information is available at www.artsvote.org.
Nothing on the McCain-Pail website about the arts.
When it comes to the Vice Presidential candidates, Sarah Palin offers an interesting contrast. While Mayor of Wasilla she cut funding for the Dorothy G. Page Museum and summarily fired its director, John Cooper. As governor of Alaska, there was a miniscule increase to the state arts council funding - most likely to continue receiving Federal funds - but somehow it ran out of money before the grants could be adjudicated. This article at artNet pretty well summarizes her actions. If she behaves anything like McCain, she will not be in favor for continued funding of the NEA.
Massachusetts Ballot Question 1
Voters in Massachusetts will have a crucial decision to make at the polls in November - and it's not just the presidential election.
Once again, they'll be faced with a proposal to get rid of the state income tax - an initiative that's getting more attention this time around because of the economic crisis.
It's called Question 1 - a proposed repeal of the state income tax and of course, the capital gains tax. The greedy are never satisfied.
Supporters say it will take money out of the hands of Beacon Hill politicians who have done nothing but waste it for years. Ask someone making minimum wage in North Adams who gets fuel assistance, Or a senior who uses the Spitzer Center. Or any teacher.
We have a bridge to fix, a city that is already running on fumes, and don't need to see local aid take another hit.
I think it's a reckless idea.
"This is throwing a bomb into government," said Peter Meade, head of the Vote No on 1 Committee. "If you vote yes, you're voting to increase the tax on your home."
For more information about how this measure will affect your town or city, check out this interactive map and web site.
Android is now Open Source
Over the past year, we announced Android, released several SDKs (eventually resulting in the 1.0 SDK), gave out the first half of the $10,000,000 prize money for the Android Developer Challenge, and prepared the first Android-powered device for users. Tomorrow, the T-Mobile G1 goes on sale.
But today, we're making what might just be the most exciting announcement of all: we and our Open Handset Alliance partners have now released the source code for Android. There's a huge amount of code and content there, so head over to http://source.android.com/ for all the details.
I'd like to offer a huge thank you and congratulations to my colleagues and the Alliance partners for what I hope will be a red-letter day for the open source community, and openness in the mobile industry.

13 Ringtones That Adults Cant Hear
13 Ringtones That Adults Cant Hear
| 366 kb | mp3NEW YORK (AP) - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class and many teachers cant even hear the ring. Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing.
As people age, many develop whats known as aging ear a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds.
The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the Mosquito.
Donna Lewis, a teacher in Manhattan, says her colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders and all of them could hear it, while the adults couldnt hear anything.

A Touching "To Kill a Mockingbird" at Barrington Stage
Although I enjoy reviewing many Berkshire events for Berkshire Fine Arts, I don't always land the plum assignments, and so I had to reluctantly defer to Editor and Publisher Charles Giuliano to review this new production which you can read here. I went to see it anyway, and here's my twitter synopsis: To Kill a Mockingbird at Barrington Stage is wonderful. The in-depth BFA critique will appear in a day or two, but I wanted to alert you to this show - one of the most dramatic and moving dramas Barrington Stage has ever done. Julianne Boyd and her gifted cast certainly deserved the standing ovation they received on Opening Night. And my eyes were wet. Yes, this old cynic was moved to tears by what he saw, and this coming of age story set in the South should strike a chord deep within you, too.
Harper Lee's book, To Kill a Mockingbird has become a classic book, mandatory in High School classrooms, and a still popular motion picture for which Gregory Peck received an Oscar for his role of Atticus Finch. The staged version is not identical to either the book or the film. I found it even more powerful and spellbinding when performed live.
An understanding Miss Maudie (Debra Jo Rupp) helps Scout (Grace Sylvia) and Jem (Christian Meola) to understand their father.
Atticus (David Adkins) is threatened by a lynch mob.
The riveting trial of Tom Robinson (played by Jerome Spratling).
Atticus, played by David Adkins lets out a blood curdling scream when he discovers his children were harmed.
Scout (Grace Sylvia) learns a life lesson from Atticus (David Adkins)
Coming Up: This Wonderful Life, Carousel and Streetcar Named Desire
Barrington Stage has also announed a Christmas presentation of the one-man show, This Wonderful Life for December 3-20 on their Main Stage. It promises to be a wonderful twist on Frank Capra's timeless film, so full of hope and happiness, humor and and holiday cheer.
For the 2009 season, Boyd also plans to direct a fully staged Carousel by Rogers and Hammerstein, as well as the classic Tennessee Williams play, A Streetcar Named Desire. Still to be revealed: the third summer attraction, probably a comedy.
For tickets and information, you can always visit the Barington Stage website.
You can also hear Jullianne Boyd talk about Mockingbird on You Tube.
Columbus Day Weekend
It was both whacky and wonderful in the Berkshires over the Columbus Day Weekend. My friends from Boston could not get a room nearby, so they did not get to enjoy the Trockaderos de Monte Carlo who played the Hunter Center at Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA. It was a great show, and you can read my review here:
Larry Murray's Berkshire Fine Arts Review
Since I wrote it, several people have asked me about some of the more unusual dance phrases I employed in the critique.
So here are a couple of images to illustrate what a ponche and a "fish" dive are.
The ballerina is doing a "ponche" with one leg en pointe and the other pointing at midnight, a feat which i have never seen a male dancer able to perform.
And this is the gorgeous "Fish" Dive, which is as complicated as a it is beautiful and only lasts a second or two.
Another wonderful review of this performance was published by the very astute Gail Burns which you can find here:
Gail Sez Review
While North Adams is in no danger of becoming another Provincetown, it surely was nice to see a little diversity in the artistic offerings. And the sold out houses for the "Trocks" indicates that there is a market here for both more dance, and more camp.
