You'd have to be living in a cave to have missed the big Tuesday news that the iPhone is finally coming to Verizon. But what the company didn't announce yesterday may turn out to be more important to subscribers: A change in the company's upgrade policies that will make phones more expensive for current and future Verizon customers.
Verizon officials have confirmed what SmartMoney was told by Verizon sales reps at a number of stores around the country: The company is ending its popular "New Every Two" program, which offers Verizon subscribers a credit of $30 to $100 toward a new phone every two years. As of Jan. 16, the company will stop offering the credit to new customers and won't re-enroll current customers in the program after their next New Every Two upgrade. The cell carrier is also putting the brakes on its permissive early upgrade policy, store representatives confirmed.
All of this adds up to more out-of-pocket costs for Verizon customers. With the New Every Two perk, a longtime customer with a $100 credit could get the iPhone4 for $99.99 � half off its new-subscriber price of $199.99. When the program ends, new subscribers will no longer be eligible for those discounts. Existing customers will lose the perk when they renew their contracts (unless they renew before Jan. 16�but that date is well before iPhone orders will be taken). And with the end of the early upgrade program, customers who were previously eligible for discounted phones as early as 13 months into a two-year contract will now have to wait 20 months to get a new phone at the promotional new-customer price instead of retail (for the iPhone, that's currently a difference of $400).
The move comes as millions of cell customers are expected to jump to Verizon, now that the company has the highly-sought iPhone4. And none of them will be able to squeeze in before the company changes its policies, because the iPhone won't be available for new customers until Feb. 10. If Apple keeps its current new-phone release habits, customers who sign a new Verizon contract in February will be locked out of preferred pricing for later models until three months after Apple releases a new model in July 2012.
Verizon's motives in the change are obvious, analysts say: Every time a customer upgrades his phone at a discount, there's a significant cost to the company. As of now, carriers lose money on every discounted handset, but make it up with income from a two-year contract. (That subsidy is why a new 16GB iPhone 4 costs $199 with a contract and $599 retail.) By forcing consumers to wait to upgrade � or pay more to do it � the company cuts its losses, without losing any income from the contracts. "The longer you can get customers to go between upgrading their phones, the stronger the profitability for the carrier," says Michael Hodel, an equity analyst covering Verizon for Morningstar. That point hit home for Verizon rival AT&T last year when it allowed subscribers to upgrade early�often even waiving its $18 processing fee--when the iPhone4 was released on its network. Its profit margins shrunk considerably, says Hodel.
That's true for every other cell carrier as well, because most offer their own discounts and early upgrades. And as they roll out their own 4G networks and accumulate more smartphone subscribers, they're also likely get more stingy with upgrades, says Neil Strother, an analyst for ABI Research. That perk-tightening comes on top of extra fees and higher early exit charges. Sprint (S), for example, already tacks on an extra $10 monthly surcharge for 4G-capable handsets. Carriers have also doubled their early termination fees, charging up to $350 for smartphones, as a way to recoup money on the phone and contract revenue if you defect, says Andrew Eisner, the director of content for Retrevo.com.
Verizon is well positioned to be the first to adjust its upgrade program, Hodel says, because of its status�it's one of the largest carriers and has built a brand around its service, not a single device. And in general, cell carriers and analysts expect customers to accept the growing costs without much of a fight. Consumers have already proven they're rabid for the the latest and greatest device�and are willing to pay extra to get it. The week after Apple's announced its iPhone 4 in June, 2010, gadget trade-in site Gazelle.com saw a 5,900% increase in people seeking buyers for their soon-to-be-old iPhone, a trend that slowed but continued steadily over the next month when the phone hit stores.
One bright side, industry-watchers say consumers can expect the Verizon iPhone to spur more competition, which ought to improve networks � and pricing. "The four national carriers are all fighting for the smartphone crowd in some way," says Ken Dulaney, an analyst with Gartner Research. What customers lose in discounted upgrades, they might gain with different pricing plans or faster networks. (Without the iPhone, Sprint and T-Mobile are likely to focus their pitches on network speeds and Android phones.) For example, AT&T is already touting its iPhone's capability to handle voice and data simultaneously (Verizon's can't)�and the fact that its version of the handset costs a full 99-cents less.

Android to overtake iPhone sales in France next year - IDC
Android phone sales are forecast to overtake iPhone sales in France in 2011, according to IDC. Of France's projected smartphone sales of about 8 million in 2011, 29 percent are expected to be Androids and 26 percent iPhones. By 2012 the installed base of Android phones is likely to be greater than iPhones in circulation. IDC expects Android to have a 30 percent share of French smartphone sales in 2013, up from 18 percent in 2010 and 2 percent in 2009. iPhones are expected to make up 24 percent of smartphone sales in 2013 versus 29 percent in 2010. Symbian wil have a 20 percent share in 2013 versus 32 percent in 2010 and BlackBerry 13 percent versus 12 percent, respectively. The Samsung Galaxy S has been France's most popular Android phone for the last few months. Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron said the company was still in talks with Microsoft about using Windows Phone 7, but it prefers Android because Google's operating system allows it to introduce more product differentiation. "With Windows 7 we run the risk of standardising our smartphones. We would be obliged to compete only on design on price, which we want to avoid", he told Les Echos, adding that Sony Ericsson had no plan to launch a tablet.

Analysis: $673K To Buy Apple's 250,000+ App Store Apps
It's been nearly four months since Steve Jobs' missive entitled, "Thoughts on Flash," where, in addition to a fairly scathing retort at Adobe's Flash platform, the Apple CEO noted that the company's App Store carried more than 200,000 applications at the time of the letter's writing.
Move over, old metric, because the App Store recently hit a quarter-million apps�all of two years and 49 days since the service's inception. And there's no indication that iPhone and iPad developers are slowing their efforts in any way.
After all, Apple just breached the 100,000 application mark on in November 2009 and leaped over the 150,000 barrier in February of 2010. It's been taking roughly three to four months for Apple to pile on 50,000 new apps or thereabouts, but this time window has shortened considerably since the service's birth in July 2008.
According to metrics by 148apps.biz, it took Apple around 11 months to achieve its first 50,000 active applications on the App Store. From there, the App Store ramped up quite dramatically and spit out an additional 50,000 in less than half the time, or approximately four to five months. It took around three months after that for the App Store to acquire 150,000 applications, and then roughly three additional months to jump from 150,000 to 200,000.
Assuming, of course, that the three-months-or-so growth rate stays constant, that puts Apple on track for hitting half-a-million active applications in 18 months, or right at the end of 2011 / beginning of 2012. Up until this point, the App Store has enjoyed approximately 323 new uploads for every day of its existence�that's not really an "average per day" amount, given the service's gradual ramp-up, but a fun statistic nevertheless.
An analysis of the App Store by 148apps.biz reveals�unsurprisingly--that applications outnumber games on the App Store by a ratio of 5.8 to one, or 200,000 active applications to 34,000 games. In actuality, more than 300,000 applications have been uploaded to the App Store throughout its existence. Nearly 50,000 of these are since inactive, or no longer available for download by users. As well, slightly more than 50,000 publishers are now counted as active contributors to the store.
And, for those curious, 148apps.biz revealed that�of the programs analyzed�it would cost a user around $673,362 to buy every single application and game in the store. This total includes the 83,000 applications and games priced at $1� as well as the five programs priced at $1,000. Slightly more than 74,000 applications and games are completely free.

White iPhone 4 Now Delayed Until "Later This Year"
This is Apple's official statement:
White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.According to a report from 21st Century Business Herald, the company that produces the glass for the iPhone 4, Lens Technology, is having production problems with applying white paint to the glass. More specifically, the company is having problems with finding the right balance of paint thickness to allow clearance for the digitizers while at the same time adhering to the physical standards for "beauty" that Apple has for its products.
Apple's iPhone 4 retails for $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) with a two-year contract. Due to the production problems with the white iPhone, only the black model is currently available.

Jailbreaking, Rooting Phones, Video Montages are Legal
With the advent of modern smartphones, many users have sought to jailbreak their phones to allow them to use unauthorized code (such as controversial apps or services not officially allowed by hardware or service providers). Many also have sought unlock the SIM cards on phones, allowing them to be used on networks which the hardware providers do not officially have deals with.
Apple has long contended that unlocking and jailbreaking is illegal under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Apple claims that it supports a vast variety of evils including gangs, drug dealing, and terrorism. Other companies like Microsoft or Palm [now part of HP] have remained mum on the issue. And yet others -- like Google -- have been mildly supportive/tolerant of unlockers, while stopping short of providing the tools to unlock phones themselves (which might endanger their valuable carrier contracts).
Some expected the U.S. Supreme Court or further legislation by Congress would eventually tackle the issue. However, a surprising source appears to have, in essence, given unlockers and (phone) jailbreakers the legal green light -- the Library of Congress.
While not typically officially considered a part of the legislative branch, the Library of Congress is rather an independent research organization tasked with supporting Congress in a variety of ways, including legal research and preserving our nation's history.

We have some news regarding the iPhone 4 from Rogers. Rogers iPhone 4 Hardware Upgrade (HUP) details have been revealed in a placeholder employee training manual. This info is not �final� but take it with a grain of salt as changes will occur closer to the launch date.
Our sources have provided us with the following information and here it is:
Last year, Rogers provided a special iPhone upgrade that gave iPhone 3G owners the chance to upgrade to iPhone 3GS before their normal hardware upgrade eligibility. This year, we�re doing it again � and we�re expanding it to give millions more customers the chance to get an iPhone 4 at a discounted price! Every Rogers customer with a smartphone, quick messaging device, or regular cellphone (purchased on contract before June 7, 2010) is eligible for a discount on a new iPhone 4!Usually Rogers/Telus/Bell provide upgrade details at the very last minute and this time around it�s no different. According to the above, if you purchased a cellphone on contract prior to June 7, 2010 you�ll be eligible for an iPhone 4. Canadians Can Pick Their Own iPhone 4 Carrier
On Friday, the smartphone will be on sale unlocked, or free to purchase without the confines of a wireless contract, at Apple�s retail and online stores.
The phone will also be available through wireless carriers Rogers, Bell and Telus, which sell the phones for low cost if consumers are willing to lock into what are typically long-term contracts.
�An unlocked iPhone means you have to dig a little bit deeper into your purse or jeans,� said Iain Grant, managing director of consulting firm The SeaBoard Group.
�Most Canadians have actually shown they are more interested in saving the upfront cost than actually paying the real cost for the phone and having the option of moving around.�
On Monday, Apple released pricing for the unlocked phone. The 16GB iPhone 4 will cost $659, with the 32GB model costing $779. The stores also sell an iPhone 3GS 8GB model without a contract for $549.

Top Apple iPhone 4 Press Conference Predictions
Is there really a problem with the iPhone 4 antenna? Apple is about to answer this question Friday, at a hastily announced press conference at its Cupertino campus. Meanwhile, millions of iPhone 4 customers (and tech pundits) are playing the guessing game running up to Friday's event. What does Apple have to say about the antenna issue and what will it do - if anything?First off, a quick recap: evidence to date is not helping Apple. From users, to tech media, and the independent Consumer Reports said that something is wrong. Some iPhone 4 owners have complained of being stuck in iPhone 4 hell saddled with multiple iPhone 4 problems. Steve Jobs is now being directly implicated in iPhone 4 antenna-gate and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York) has penned a letter asking Jobs to personally solve the problem. Schumer is calling Apple's current software fix "insufficient."
So what could Apple do to solve the problem? Here are some educated guesses tech pundits have put forward ahead of tomorrow's event:
The iPhone Is Selling Very Well
The first thing we are going to hear tomorrow is probably how well the iPhone 4 is selling. 1.7 million devices in the first three days, so expect at least two million iPhone 4s sold to date.
Acknowledge The Problem
"Apple will undoubtedly acknowledge that holding the iPhone 4 does affect the signal. But they'll note once again that this is true of all cellphones," predicts TechCrunch's MG Siegler. Apple said all smartphones experience signal drops when held in a certain way (some call it the 'death grip'), and reports say that many now have better reception with the iPhone 4 than they did with previous iterations of the device.
Bumper Cases Won't Make The Cut
If Apple's solution to the iPhone 4 antenna woes will be to give away $29-worth bumper cases to all customers, it would cost the company over $51 million just to cover the initial batch of 1.7 million iPhone 4's sold in the first three days of availability (figure at market value, as Bumper Cases are said to cost Apple $1).
The iPhone 4, when used with one of Apple's bumper cases (which surround the sides of the phone) fixes the antenna issue, Consumer Reports confirmed. However, MacObserver notes that the bumper cases would be incompatible with the iPhone 4 dock, and also won't fit in third-party cases, thus not an ideal solution.
iOS 4.1 Is Just Software Fix
Another road Apple could take is to flaunt the iOS 4.0.1, which addresses the way signal bars are displayed in the top-left corner of all iPhones. Those pinning their hopes that the OS update would fix the antenna issue will be disappointed to hear that the first reports indicate iOS 4.0.1 does not fix the 'death grip'.
A Recall Would Be Too Costly
Apple would lose even more money if it will have to recall all iPhone 4s sold to date. One analyst estimated that this would cost the company around $1.5 billion, a sum that would increase by $200 million per each ongoing week of sales. Another analyst quoted by Reuters said she expects Apple to quickly move past this issue, as a recall is not on the table.
Non-conductive Coating Over Antenna
One of the most probable scenarios is that Apple is already rolling off the assembly lines in China a new iPhone 4 batch that has a special non-conductive coating over the metal band around the phone, which in theory would solve the �death grip' issues.
Steve Cheneyis over at TechCrunch argues that Apple and its suppliers have the skills to make quick modification to apply the extra coating layer. MacObserver also notes that Apple could set up a free exchange program for those who wish to swap their device with an iPhone 4 with the new coating.
Boom! One More Thing
"Sounds crazy, I know, but I think something big, or at least biggish, is going down tomorrow," writes Darin Fireball's John Gruber. He has a hunch that Apple will come up with something special in addition to a resolution to the iPhone 4 antenna problem.
