Nokia N95 as a 3G Modem on a Mac: Connected outside of the City

When we leave the city and the safety of an almost constant connection to the Internet there are times when we need to check our email, run a blog post or just catch up with some work.

Having experienced some time out of town this weekend we still needed to be in touch with the outside server world and so turned to our trusty Nokia N95 and its built in 3G modem.

We have been Mac users now for a month, having finally jumped ship from windows after 10 years as a result one to many Vista nightmares. Set up was surprisingly easy with us connecting to the Internet via our N95 and Vodafone in under 5 minutes.

All that is needed is a quick trip to the Nokia page for the isync plugin and then the simple question of enabling bluetooth on both the N95 and the Mac.

Running through 'Set Up Bluetooth Device' was straightforward with a screen requesting user name and password for our carrier - in our case Vodafone. We picked up the details from Ross Barkmen's GPRS Info Page which carries usernames and passwords for most services providers around the world.

With the password in place it was simply a case of opening our network preferences and connecting via Bluetooth.

It enabled us to post a couple of entries today and finally feel connected regardless of location. All we need do now is move from Vodafone who allow (in their words) a 'massive 120mb per month' of data to T Mobiles unlimited Web 'n' Walk that seems to be getting all the hype recently.

3GSM: Nokia, Vodafone in Software Tie-up

Nokia and Vodafone have collaborated on the development of S60 software on Symbian OS, with the release of the first Vodafone specific software package to all S60 licensees. The S60 platform and the Vodafone specific software offer an integrated reference implementation that enables Vodafone to roll out innovative new services to customers across a range of different handsets without having to develop a range of different software designs. Samsung and Nokia are expected to be the first handset vendors to ship devices incorporating this software in 2007.

"Vodafone's customers will benefit as we are able to get our services out faster and more cost-effectively on a wide range of devices from several handset brands. Handset vendors will benefit from saving development costs while maintaining the ability to differentiate on additional functionality and industrial design," said Jens Schulte-Bockum, Vodafone's Global Director of Terminals.

"We are thrilled to work with Vodafone and Nokia in introducing leading-edge smartphones to European customers. I'm very proud to introduce SGH-i520, which will be our first model built on S60 with all of the latest multimedia features and high speed data connectivity (HSDPA). It is very exciting to lead the trend towards open mobile software platforms with these leading brands. Starting with i520, we will introduce further enhanced lineup based on S60 with Samsung's differentiated multimedia features," said Chul-hwan Lee, Senior Vice President of Mobile R&D Team, Samsung Electronics. Samsung's SGH-i520 will be available to Vodafone customers during the first quarter of this year.

The collaboration between Vodafone, S60 and selected handset vendors also covers joint marketing activities aimed at Vodafone's customers.

Nokia has announced a free mapping solution which can be downloaded to smartphones like its GPS enabled N95 From tomorrow, smartphone owners can download Nokia's mapping and navigation solution for free. The smart2go navigation application offers mapping and routing in over 150 countries and has support for full turn-by-turn sat nav in over 30 countries. The application also allows people to see where they are on a map, search from a database of over 15 million points of interest (POI) and create routes to get them there.

Nokia trailed rivals in coming out with folding designs in 2004 and last year missed the trend for slim phones. It has since reshaped its design operations and crafted the N95 model so it slides to the left as well as the right, revealing different keypads, an effort to leapfrog competitors

Nokia plans to install the application on all future N-series phones - like the GPS enabled N95 - under the name Nokia maps. From February 10, the application will be available to download to selected Nokia Series 60 phones and Windows Mobile 5.0 handsets and will then roll out to other Nokia Series 60 phones, Series 40 phones, plus PocketPC, Linux and other Windows Mobile devices.

Nokia N95 GPS Tracking Google Earth

We went into Vodafone a couple of days ago after our old Sony phone finally gave up the ghost and came out with a Nokia N95. The N95 has been reviewed on many sites for its various multi-media/wi-fi/photographic abilities but what opened up our thoughts to move over to a Nokia was the built in GPS.

If you own a N95 one of the first things you should do is download the recently released free application 'Sports Tracker' from Nokia. Sports Tracker is aimed at the sports or general user on foot or cycling and more importantly it provides full route tracking with the ability to upload to Google Earth.

The ability to create tracks for Google Earth/Maps in a small portable portable phone is impressive. On our first test run we used the Sports Tracker application on a drive across Berkshire (its meant to be used for running or cycling but it does the same job in a car). The N95 performed well considering it was placed well inside the car, rather than on the windscreen as with most in-car GPS systems. After you have reached your destination you can simply choose to 'Save as Google Earth' and then transfer to your PC.

Once in Google Earth a variety of information points are provided on your travel speed as well as your highest and lowest altitudes. We have only touched on the basic level of functionality here but the N95 GPS comes highly recommended, it is definitely a step forward in Google Earth tracking for the general consumer.
