Barcelona, Spain - Sony Ericsson announced the game changing XperiaTM PLAY, the latest phone in its XperiaTM range of Android based smartphones.
XperiaTM PLAY delivers the smartphone functionality that the most serious power users could need, teamed with the immersive gaming experience that any gamer would want.
In portrait mode, the Android smartphone offers all the benefits that users have come to expect from Sony Ericsson�s existing range of XperiaTM smartphones with best-in-class entertainment experiences, a great 5 megapixel camera, a brilliant 4� multi-touch screen and great social networking features.
However, slide out the gaming control and users enter a new world of immersive mobile gaming. The slide out game pad reveals a digital D pad, two analogue touch pads, two shoulder buttons and the four PlayStation icons: circle, cross, square and triangle. Qualcomm�s optimized Snapdragon processor with a 1Ghz CPU and ibedded Adreno GPU graphics processor deliver silky smooth 60fps play-back 3D mobile gaming and Web browsing with minimal power consumption so Xperia PLAY users can enjoy long hours of battery life and game time.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT TO UNVEIL "PLAYSTATION�SUITE," DELIVERING THE WORLD OF PLAYSTATION� TO ANDROID� BASED PORTABLE DEVICES
Simultaneously Launching "PlayStation�Certified" License Program to Provide

Tokyo - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) unveiled "PlayStation�Suite" (PS Suite), delivering the PlayStation� experience to Android� based portable devices*1. Through this entirely new initiative, users will be able to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history.
In the dramatically evolving and diversifying mobile market, the number of users who enjoy games casually on a variety of devices including mobile phones, smart-phones and tablet PCs, has been increasing significantly. By offering "PlayStation quality" content to this rapidly growing market, SCE will not only deliver the PlayStation experience to a wider base of users around the globe, but will also be able to offer game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to these devices.
In providing the PlayStation experience on Android based portable devices, SCE will commence a "PlayStation�Certified" license program for hardware manufacturers. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X!0 [TOOL] [NEW 20/01/2011] Flashtool version 0.2.4
FlashTool now is something like an all in one Tool for your phone.
It can:
- Flash original Images (Android 1.6 & Android 2.1 Images)
- Root your phone
- Install xRecovery, Busybox
- Clean your Rom (remove /system/apps apps of your choice)
- Clear dalvik cache
- Optimize (install of JIT v2)
- Customize (installs apps found in the custom/apps folder of the flashtool)
- Clean uninstalled (remove any references to system apps removed in the Clean (root needed) step)
DISCLAIMER ABOUT THE 0.2.4 VERSION
This new version works with ftf files stored in the FlashTool\firmwares\ folder.
To build these ftf files, you have to go to Advanced -> Bundle Creation.
- Source folder : folder where your sin files are.
- Device, Version, Branding are informations about the firmware you want to create. These fields are mandatory. The name of the ftf file will be based on these 3 informations
- take sin from the folder list to the firmware list and then click OK.

Sony Ericsson: We�re sticking with Android for now
EXCLUSIVE: Windows Phone 7 still a possibility but not a focus
Sony Ericsson has confirmed that it will continue to put its weight behind Google�s Android operating system, although it says that it's still keeping the door open to Microsoft and its Windows Phone 7 mobile phone system.
�We are keeping a watching brief�, Steven Walker, acting head of global marketing at Sony Ericsson told Pocket-lint in a one-to-one interview at CES in Las Vegas.
�We've done a lot of work with Microsoft over the years. We�ve launched a number of 6.xx products, but we made a decision not to bring a product to market in the first wave. We absolutely maintain to keep an open mind towards Windows Phone 7. We continue to engage in a relationship with Microsoft, but we haven�t made any concrete announcement about when and how we would introduce Windows Phone 7 into the portfolio�.
Walker says that Sony Ericsson is instead focusing on Android, galvanising behind the OS to create a strong ecosystem for consumers:
�We do think it�s important at this moment in time to focus our external messaging on Android based products. We see the need as an industry to galvanise behind the Android ecosystem to create a strong ecosystem for consumers�.
Why? Walker says the answer is simple:
�We need to do this so that there will only be a certain number of eco-systems that will prevail. Developers won�t develop for 17 eco-systems. Consumers won�t choose between 100 different eco-systems. In the end only a certain number will prevail�.
But it�s not going to be Android and only Android; like Motorola, Walker does acknowledge that the company will have to embrace other operating systems in the future:
�We shouldn�t limit ourselves to one opportunity, but we aren�t yet ready to make any specific announcement about products. At this moment in time, there is clearly a galvanising within the industry around Android as a creditable alternative to what�s out there, and we think that�s a good thing�.
When asked as to whether he was worried about a possible fragmentation of the Android OS occurring, Walker was confident that Google will sort out the main issue currently on the minds of most high-end Android users: which version are they running?
�Of course some people care. In the higher end of the market the spec savvy consumers do. If you take the broad church of Android users there will be a big chunk of people that don�t care, there will be people that upgrade and don�t notice. I do think that the release thing is an issue of this particular moment. I think once Android becomes a much more accepted part of the market overall I think the release itself will become a less critical part of the whole solution. Right now there is a lot of focus on what release of Android it is on. It�s the first question people ask �which version of Android is it on�, but in a year�s time I don�t think it will be the first question people ask, it will be in the list of questions but it won�t be the first question�.
So does that mean only new phones with the latest versions of the OS? It looks likely:
�That said we are launching a product in Q1 of this year running 2.3, we have recognised the need to have our products on the latest release. Last year we didn�t anticipate the strength of feeling that consumers would have towards the Android release. And again that was a learning experience of the first year of mass market Android smartphones�.

Everything Everywhere to get Playstation phone
Everything Everywhere is believed to be signing with Sony Ericsson to range its upcoming �Playstation� phone, the Xperia Play, well placed industry sources told Mobile.
The device, which it is thought will be launched at Mobile World Congress next month, is likely to be ranged on the operator�s �premium� brand, Orange.
The Xperia Play is expected to run on Android 2.3, with Sony Ericsson�s proprietary Android skin.
A Playstation app will allow users to access the gaming function of the phone, with games controlled either using the built in gyroscope or the traditional Playstation buttons.
The phone also sports a 1GHz Snapdragon Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM.
Sony Ericsson has yet to name a launch date for the phone.
Both Sony Ericsson and Everything Everywhere said they �would not comment on rumours and speculation�.

Sony Ericsson has admitted that its 2010 line-up, that saw the launch of devices like the Xperia X10, wasn�t really up to scratch.
�The first generation of handsets in our portfolio was about getting the capability out there�, Steve Walker (Acting) global head of marketing for Sony Ericsson told Pocket-lint, in a one-to-one interview at CES in Las Vegas.
�It�s important to remember that 2010 was the first year for mass market Android handsets. Yes there had been one or two things out from HTC previously, but when we started to design our 2010 handsets in 2008, nobody really knew the dynamics of the Android smartphone market or even what the smartphone market was going to be�, explains Walker in respect of a range that hasn�t been too well received over the last 12 months.
�None of us could predict 2 years previously, to what extent users would switch into smartphones. None of us could really predict what would be more important and less important for consumers�.
Walker acknowledges that the company learnt �a huge amount last year�, but says that Sony Ericsson is now considerably stronger because of it.
�As we do every year, we�ve taken those learnings and applied them to the new products in the new portfolio. We do think we�ve taken a big step forward for 2011�.
So what went wrong last year?
�We talked a lot about the platform and the software. The hardware was important but the hardware played second fiddle. What we think is different in 2011 is that consumer attention is swinging back to hardware once more. That�s not to say people aren�t focused on software, but that they are a little more in balance now�.
But it�s not just the hardware that Sony Ericsson admits it didn�t get 100 per cent right:
�Last year we didn�t anticipate the strength of feeling that consumers would have towards the Android release. And again that was a learning experience of the first year of mass market Android smartphones�.
Walker says that the new Xperia Arc announced at CES, and expected in the shops in the next couple of months, �is just the first of many products we will show through the year�, and the first of many to embrace the learning�s of the last 12 months.
�If we hadn�t done what we did with the X10 and the X10 minis we wouldn�t have been able to do what we�ve done here today�, he told Pocket-lint looking down at the new Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc in his hand with a big smile of pride on his face.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 vs HTC Desire Z pics
Here are some pics comparing the Sony Ericsson X10 and the HTC Desire Z. The boxes are the same slide out style. The finish on the X10 box is slightly nicer but the box of the Desire Z is more solid. As I mentioned in my previous post, the X10 is lighter and thinner but just a tad larger in surface area. The Desire Z feels way more solid and well built in the hand because of the metal. The X10 has the advantage of the larger screen but I found the Desire Z's super LCD just brighter, sharper and more colorful. It also has better visibility in direct sunlight. I found the Desire Z's screen also more responsive. The X10 also has problems with the unresponsiveness at the edge of the screen. In terms of performance the Desire blows the X10 away...not only in benchmarks but also in normal usage such as apps, gales and just flicking through the UI. HTC Sense is just gorgeous and was more useful and fluid than Sony Ericsson's UXP. The camera of the X10 is slightly better than the Desire Z. The keyboard makes the Desire Z thicker and heaver but having a hardware keyboard makes typing long emails a breeze plus I use it as a controller for my beloved emulators. In conclusion, I am happy that I am switching over from Sony Ericsson to HTC. Perhaps Sony Ericsson's future flagship Android phones will lure me back. As much as I love Sony Ericsson...the Desire Z is just simply better.
