Free iPhone Games Produces Varying Amounts of Fun

One of the iPhone�s most revolutionary features is its large library of instantly accessible free games.

The question is whether any are worth your time. To find out, I thought I�d put the App Store to the test by downloading the top 10 free titles from the �All Games� category (based on number of recent downloads as of July 17, 2009), and playing each one for as long as it held my attention. The only caveat was a 15-minute time limit for each game. If a free game holds your attention for at least 15 minutes, that�s good.

1. �Wooden Labyrinth 3D Lite�

I had a love/hate relationship with my old tabletop Labyrinth game as a kid. I loved the concept, but I hated how much I sucked at manipulating those little knobs to guide the ball past the holes. The iPhone version, with its simple tilt controls, makes things more enjoyable. I�m surprised how accurate and realistic the physics are, and I love the way the 3-D perspective shifts as you tilt the unit, making the screen feel like a window into an alternate world. The randomly generated levels in this �lite� version are hit-or-miss, but the variable difficulty ensures lot of replay value.

One Free iPhone App - has 51 Games for FREE

The title says it all; there indeed are fifty-one different games of various genre in All 51 Games FREE. If you are obsessed with number and don�t care much about quality, this cluttered game is all yours. It would take you days or even weeks to try all the games.

The average rating of this game is one and half out of five from the total of 12,390 ratings. There are also no good comments for the game. Curiosity of being free and mystery of the game name drew so much downloads that the game has made to the top list.

In the App Store, you can become famous for both good and bad reasons. You now know to which group All 51 Games FREE falls into.

Enough defaming something that doesn�t cost me a pie. Well, I can�t do that with this combo game package. The graphics are too basic and there ain�t sound or music in all the 51 games. It is nothing different from making mute animation videos of yore in this technologically advanced age.

The Best FREE iPhone Games

Did you know that owning an iPhone makes you a better person? It�s true. The Department of Made-up Statistics and Lies (DMSL) recently published a study, which claims that male iPhone users who identify with the �gamer lifestyle� are happier, healthier, and have slightly larger penises than their non-iPhone-owning counterparts. Surprised? We are. Because even though we�ve been spending more time gaming on our iPhone, our penises never felt smaller.

Another more concerning problem: most of the Lite demos and free game apps we�ve come across are just too miserly with the amount of content they give you. There�s something about getting slapped in the face with an advertisement to upgrade after we�ve only played for a few minutes that makes us want to delete the app and forget that we ever downloaded it in the first place. Plus, we�re broke from buying an iPhone in the first place! That�s why we sorted through all the free apps we could find to bring you the real gems that are actually worth downloading.

3D Checkers: A Great, Free iPhone Game of Checkers

While we were at WWDC 2009, Koduco showed us their then-upcoming, free iPhone checkers title 3D Checkers [App Store]. The game has since appeared in the App Store.

Simply put, 3D Checkers is the best checkers game available for the iPhone. And, well�it's free.

The game features drag-and-drop gameplay, two play modes (player vs. player and player vs. computer), two AI difficulty levels, and two board designs. Indeed, checkers is not the most hardcore of games, but anyone who enjoys a little of the red and black (or white, in this case) would do well to grab this one.

The best free iPhone games

It's funny how a new games system can actually alter our speech patterns. As I hunt through the App Store now looking for free games, I come to realise how many new words I've been taught since it launched.

'App' seems to have been accepted as a preferable alternative to 'software', while fiddling with capitalisation is now perfectly acceptable as long as the capital letter is preceded with a lower case 'i'.

And even though my spell checker still doesn't like it, 'Lite' is undeniably the buzz word of the iGeneration (you see! Even I'm doing iT now). Even though it's not actually a word, its meaning is understood by every iPhone and iPod touch user across the world.

If something's 'Lite', it's free, but has reduced functionality and, for the most part, has a full version counterpart that you can pay for.

Of course, we could just say 'demo', but that's not yet been approved or copyrighted by Apple, so for the time being we're going to have to stick with Lite.

'Free' is a word that's not going to be so easily put aside, of course. 'Free iPhone games' is the phrase that brings a lot of budding iPhoners directly to Pocket Gamer, so I've spent the afternoon sifting through an iSea of Lite games to dig out some freebie gems just for you. I mean, iYou. Whatever.

Spaceballs, Bryan Mitchell

No, Spaceballs sadly isn't linked to Mel Brooks's classic spoof sci-fi movie, but it's still well worth a look.

It's a free version of the match-three chain style of game, in which you're required to shoot coloured balls into a long and winding line of other balls. Once you punch together a row of three or more same coloured spheres, they evaporate, and the chain is shortened.

It's relatively new, but it's going down a storm over on the App Store thanks to several different game modes and an online high score leaderboard, so check it out if you like a good Zuma-clone.

iPhone Apps Store Dominated by Games

Games rule the Apple's app sales, which encompasses 800 million downloads

When it comes to Apple's App Store, the marketplace has been a runaway hit. Not only did it inspire RIM, Google, and Microsoft to launch similar marketplaces, but it generated 800 million downloads and a massive new software industry. Say what you will about the iPhone and Apple itself, but it�s hard to fault Apple's tactics and track record when it comes to the App Store.

Within the App store, according to a recent study, games are by far the most successful applications in both sales and downloads. Games scored 12 of the top 25 most-downloaded application spots. One game, Tap Tap Revenge, has become a phenomenon, downloaded on over 32 percent of iPhones and iPod Touches that have connected to the App store.

Brian Jurutka, a VP at market research firm ComScore, which carried out the recent survey, states, "Tap Tap's success demonstrates that there is ample opportunity in the app space for any publisher to obtain significant distribution with a product that engages users. Since the number of app users is growing nearly 10% each month, that opportunity will only continue to grow for both existing and emerging app developers."

Game developers like John Carmack are finding the iPhone and iPod Touch's powerful hardware and vast user base makes for an extremely promising mobile gaming device. Some believe the iPhone/iPod Touch will soon rival Nintendo's DS and Sony's PlayStation Portable, the traditional entries in the mobile gaming market.

Coolest Free iPhone Games and Applications

One of the things I like best about my iPhone is that I can get all sorts of games and applications for free off the iTunes store. Like most things in life, not all apps are created equal and if you have been on the lookout for some quality free games and applications for your iPhone, I am going to run down a few of my favorites here.

Fandango Movie App

I like to go to the movies, but I don't like to have to wait on the phone to get movie times if I am not near a computer to check online. I downloaded the new Fandango application for the iPhone and if you are a movie fan, you need to grab the app too.

Using the application you can put in your zip code or allow the app to find your location. After your location is entered, the application will show you nearby movie theaters along with movie times. If the theater participates, you can even buy movie tickets right from the application with your credit card and avoid the lines. Movie times are accurate and the application is very easy to use. Fans can also rate movies via the application.

Darts

One of the games I often play when I am sitting in the line to pick my son up from school is a darts game from Brian Hammond, which you can get more details on from dartsapp. The game is simple enough and offers practice and play versus AI modes. When playing the AI you can choose from beginner, intermediate, and master skill levels. Two game types are offered including X01 and Cricket.

CrappyRPG Lite - A role playing game in the traditional hack-and-slash style where you have a fully customizable character with skills and abilities that you can build over time by gaining experience from fighting enemies. The Lite version allows you to play up to the ninth level, while the full version has 29 levels in total.

Wolfenstein 3D is not a Free iPhone Game

When it comes to the gaming industry, few names are as loved or revered as John Carmack. Mr. Carmack launched ID games, literally hand-coding most of the original Wolfenstein 3D and Doom games. The optimizations he fathered in the Quake and Doom series set a high bar for engines to come. Thus when Mr. Carmack announced he was working on a new game for the iPhone, the gaming community naturally took note.

Now that game has been released at last, and it turns out that Mr. Carmack has breathed new life into an old favorite. In the end, Mr. Carmack has created a hardware-optimized version of the classic Wolfenstein 3D. The game first started as a port of the Java cell phone game Wolfenstein RPG. Faced with software rendering inefficiencies, Mr. Carmack took matters into his own hands, finishing code for a hardware-optimized Wolfenstein RPG in only four days, when it was estimated to take a full development team 2 months.

What is it? It's a frantic, colourful symbol matcher

Candy looks a lot like any matching puzzler, and to an extent it is. However, it's got a great combo system that'll get your heart pounding much more than your average symbol-slider game. You can carry on moving the tiles as combos are sparking-off elsewhere on the board, meaning that if you're quick enough you can rack-up truly massive chain reactions.

Your aim in each level is to make the little candy tiles reach the bottom of the board. This Lite version gives you a handful of levels from the paid version's 80, and it'll keep you going for a relatively brief but very sweet while.

Crazy Tanks Lite

What is it? It's a cartoony 3D tank arena title

The first of this week's tank games, Crazy Tanks is a tilt controlled arena blasting game. In each level, you have to destroy all the enemy tanks and gun emplacements. Tapping the screen shoots your cannon, so it's very simple to control.

It won't take too long to blast through this Lite version, but the 3D graphics are easy on the eyes and the simple gameplay makes for some breezy fun. The full version comes with 30 levels, and is just 59p at the time of writing. Ready the cannon!

The iPhone's most popular rhythm game gets an overhaul, and you can download it for free. Tap Tap Revenge 2 is our free iPhone game of the week

Rhythm games have exploded in recent years across all gaming formats, but it�s the Tap Tap series that�s dominated on the iPhone. There�s one major reason for this: most of the games are free.

The second instalment of the Tap Tap Revenge branch, Tap Tap Revenge 2, has just been released, complete with new visual effects, tunes and game modes. Although most of the songs you can download are from fledgling artists, there are songs from bigger groups like Death Cab for Cutie and Nine Inch Nails available too. Again, these additional songs are free to download.

Tap Tap Revenge works on the idea that once you�ve grown to love a song by playing through it, you�re more likely to buy the tune separately on iTunes, and indeed more songs from that artist.

Deal or No Deal Lite

More and more corporations are trying to break into the lucrative industry of iPhone and iPod Touch games these days, and the giant media conglomerates aren�t far behind the pack! Deal or No Deal, the extremely popular game show, is now porting its hallmark game format into the App Store, with the release of Deal or No Deal, and its free counterpart, Deal or No Deal Lite. The game was created for iPhone and iPod Touch by iPlay, a games development company.

Deal or No Deal Lite This game comes from (what we believe to be) an affiliate of a multi-billion dollar corporation, so we expect big things from it. At first glance, it sure seems to live up to those expectations. The game opens up to quick question, giving you 10 seconds to decide whether you would like sound turned off or on. I don�t this was particularly necessary, as the iPhone and iPod Touch have built in functions for turning the sound on and off, and this could have been done using an in-game button, but oh well. Next, the game jumps right into the content, but with a new mode of gameplay. Instead of only having one million dollar case, half of all the cases are a million dollars. We found this made the game too easy to win, and in our eyes, made it less fun. We also found some parts of the game very slow, and we�re hoping that iPlay can fix it up for the next release.

Study claims free iPhone games lack long-term appeal

Just 20 per cent of people who download a free iPhone app come back to use it the next day, while after 30 days, just 5 per cent are still using it.

That's according to a study conducted by analytics firm Pinch Media. What's more, paid apps show a steeper decline in user interest.

It should be noted that the study relates to iPhone applications of all kinds, not just games. We wouldn't be surprised if games performed better.

Pinch also says free apps tend to be run 6.6 times more often than paid apps - 80 sessions - although CEO Eric Yardley explains to TechCrunch that the outlook for ad-supported apps is nevertheless somewhat murky.
