SymbianOn Private Call and Sms Guard v.3.21 S60V3
It has the following functions:
1- Phone call management
* a. Reject all incoming calls. In this mode, all of the incoming call will be automatically rejected. It can be used in the time when a user does not want to be disturbed (for example, when a user is driving a car or having a meeting)
* b. Accept only recognized call. In this mode, all of the unknown calls will be rejected; those recognized calls (names are already stored in the phonebook/contacts) will be not affected.
* c. Reject calls from blacklist. In this mode, all of the calls from the predefined blacklist will be automatically rejected, whereas the rest of the calls will not have any effect. An end user can make use of "Manage Lists" function to create the needed blacklist. This can be used in the situation when a user does not want to be harassed from some people.
* d. Accept call from whitelist. In contrast to the previous one, in this mode, mobile only accept calls from the predefined whitelist. All of the other calls from non-whitelist will be automatically rejected. An end user may use "Manage Lists" function to create the needed whitelist.
* e. Personalized call rejection. In this mode,an end user may define personalized call rejections for each of the members in the "Specific List". A user may select "Reject call", "Reply by SMS" or "Greeting" options to reject calls. A user may use "Manage Lists" to create his/her "Specific list".
2- SMS management
* a. "PCG" can help to manage the SMS messages in the mobile phone to make the needed messages visible or invisible in the "Inbox/Sent" of the Nokia "Messaging" application. In this case, a user can hide the sensitive information even your phone is lost, or the user does not want to share the information with others.
* b. An end user may create his/her "Baby list" using "PCG". Once the "Baby list" has been set up, in the next start-up of "PCG", it will automatically scan all of the existing short messages. If a message is to from the "Baby list", then messages will be automatically hidden. In addition, it can also automatically hide the short messages from "Baby list" if it is running. This will eventually protect the user's privacy since others cannot view the SMS without supplying a correct password. A user can set his/her password in "Active mode". When an SMS from "Baby list" comes in the mobile phone icon on the top-left corner of the screen will keep blinking until the user has entered the "Manage SMS" / "Call Records" area using "PCG".
3- Phone call log management
* All of the phone call records from "Baby list" will be automatically hidden. A user can ONLY view the phone call record by inputting a correct password.
* When a call from one of the member in the "Baby list" comes in, if it is not answered, then a small "mobile phone icon" will keep blinking until the user enters either "Manage SMS" or "Call Records" area with a correct password provided.
4- Phone call recording
Whenever a call has been establish (in whichever user interface), if a user wants to record the caller's voice (for example, please tell me your phone number or your home address, then I can record it down), the user just simply needs to simultaneously press "ABC" key(on which has a pen icon) and "+" key, "PCG"will automatically invoke the "Recorder" application in S60 to record the telephony voice. As such, t the caller's voice and the user's voice will be recorded simultaneously. A user may the functions from the recorder to "Stop", "Pause" or "Continue" to record the voice. Note:For those S60 phones, which has the "QWERTY" keyboard layout,a user needs to use "CTRL+A" key combination to activate the telephony voice call recording. Currently, Nokia S60 E61 has the keyboard layout.
5- Automatic call rejection
When this function is used, all of the incoming calls will be automatically rejected. If the caller uses a mobile phone to make the call, then the caller may receive a customized SMS message. This is especially useful when a user does not want to be disturbed; however,he/she still wants the caller to get some information about the callee. A user may choose an SMS template like "I am driving call"or "I am having a meeting now, please do not disturb me"as a reply.
6- Automatic removal of the SMS message from the blacklist
A user may define his/her own "SMS Blacklist". In this case, all of the SMS from the blacklist will be automatically removed when the SMS message come in. This function is very useful when a user does not want to receive those harass SMS messages or advertisement SMS messages.
7- Keyboard autolock
A user may define a time interval for "Autolock time interval"?When keyboard is not used within the time, then "Call Manager" will help to lock the keyboard automatically.
8- Quick key lock function
Except the time when a call is established, no matter whichever user interface a user is currently in, the user may simultaneously press "ABC" key(on which there is a pen)and "+" key to activate the quick key lock function. The benefit of this function is that a user does not to switch to the "Idle screen" in order the lock the keyboard. Another benefit of this function is that it can help us to quickly lock whichever screen. Note:1) For some of the S60 phones, when this quick key lock function is activated, after key lock is deactivated in the active idle screen, a user may not see the left/right soft keys in the screen. If this happens, a user may press any of the numeric keys in the phone to recover this situation, or a user may choose to use the S60 standard way ("left soft key" + "+" key) to activate the key lock function since this ONLY happens in the active idle screen 2) For those S60 phones, which have the "QWERTY" keyboard layout, a user must use "CTRL+A" key combination to activate the telephony voice recording?Currently, Nokia E60 uses the keyboard.
9- File security
A user may use the left and right soft key to browse the directories in the phone, and the user may choose the files to encrypt or decrypt.
10- Auto start enable By default, this application is auto-started.
11- It can hide itself in the task manager and don't let the others know

Announcing the Android 1.0 SDK, release 1
About this time last year, my colleagues and I were preparing for the first of the "early look" SDK releases. I remember being a little freaked out—November 12 was starting to sound awfully close! But I think I can safely speak for the entire Android team when I say that we were all very excited about that upcoming release. In the year since, we've run and concluded the first Android Developer Challenge, given away $5,000,000, released more SDK builds, and worked with our partners to prepare the first device for users. It's been quite the whirlwind of a year.
In one of those strange cosmic symmetries, here we are a year later, and we're once again very excited about an upcoming release. I'm referring, of course, to the first Android-powered device that our colleagues at T-Mobile have just announcedthe T-Mobile G1. We can't wait to see our hard work on store shelves and in the hands of users, but today we're almost as excited because we're announcing the brand-new Android 1.0 SDK, release 1.
Yes, that means we're officially at 1.0. Of course the SDK won't remain static—we'll keep improving the tools by adding features and fixing bugs. But now developers can rely on the APIs in the SDK, and can update their applications to run on Android 1.0-compatible devices. The Android Market beta will also launch with the T-Mobile G1, providing developers an easy and open way to distribute their applications on that and later devices. I've already seen a lot of applications that have me stoked, and I can't wait to see things really come together as developers cross that final mile to prepare their applications for Android 1.0.
So what's next for us? Well, we'll keep working on the SDK, as I said. But we're also working hard with our partners in the Open Handset Alliance on the open-source release, with the aim of making the code available in the fourth quarter. The second Android Developer Challenge is also on the horizon—watch this space for more details. We're also already working on the future of the Android platform, and on more devices. We've updated the Developer Roadmap, and we'll keep updating it as more information becomes available.
It has indeed been quite an exciting road to get to where we are today. The road stretches on ahead though, and we're not slowing down for a moment. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you developers out there—and trying out your apps on my phone!
Happy Coding!

Panoramio
The Panoramio web site has a great collection of photos from all over the world, and they also have a very convenient web API. I thought it would be a lot of fun to use Android to access this content while you are out walking around and especially to have Android find interesting photos based on your current location. The resulting open source application is now available in the apps-for-android project.
The application starts by showing your current location in a custom MapView. You can pan and zoom this map to choose the area you want to search.
Once you have selected a search area, the application downloads thumbnails of the most popular photos taken within that area:
You can tap on an item to see more details.
From here you can use the menu to find more pictures by the same photographer or to see the original photo on the Panoramio site. My two favorite features, though, help you find the location of the photo in the real world. You can show the location on the map along with your current location:
Or, you can bring up a radar view that uses the compass and GPS to show you the location of the photo in relation to your own location:
I thought that other applications might want to use the radar view for their own purposes ("find me the nearest taqueria"), so I split that into its own package. You can find the source for that in the Radar project. Of course, you don't need the source in order to use this feature. Because of Android's component architecture, all you need to do us use an Intent:
Intent i = new Intent("com.google.android.radar.SHOW_RADAR");
i.putExtra("latitude", 37.422f);
i.putExtra("longitude", -122.084f);
startActivity(i);
The code for these applications is not very long, but they are a good example of how to use a number of Android's location APIs:
- Using an embedded MapView along with a MyLocationOverlay to plot your current location. The is also a custom class which extends Overlay to draw the Panoramio pushpin.
- Using the SensorManager to get our compass heading.
- Using the LocationManager to determine our current location

Using WebViews
I've written a small application called WebViewDemo that shows how you can add web content to your application. You can find it in the apps-for-android project. This application demonstrates how you can embed a WebView into an activity and also how you can have two way communication between your application and the web content.
A WebView uses the same rendering and JavaScript engine as the browser, but it runs under the control of your application. The WebView can be full screen or you can mix it with other Views. The content for your WebView can come from anywhere. The WebView can download content from the web, or it can come from local files stored in your assets directory. The content can even be dynamically generated by your application code. For this example, the HTML comes from a local file called demo.html.
This application does not do very much: when you click on the android, he raises his arm.
This could, of course, easily be accomplished with a little bit of JavaScript. Instead, though, WebViewDemo takes a slightly more complicated path to illustrate two very powerful features of WebView.
First, JavaScript running inside the WebView can call out to code in your Activity. You can use this to have your JavaScript trigger actions like starting a new activity, or it can be used to fetch data from a database or ContentProvider. The API for this is very simple: just call the addJavascriptInterface method on your WebView. You pass an object whose methods you want to expose to JavaScript and the name to use when making calls. You can see the exact syntax in WebViewDemo.java. Here we are making our DemoJavascriptInterface object available to JavaScript where it will be called "window.demo".
Second, your Activity can invoke JavaScript methods. All you have to do is call the loadUrl method with the appropriate JavaScript call:
mWebView.loadUrl("javascript:wave()");
Our WebViewDemo uses both techniques: when you click on the android, it calls out to the activity, which then turns around and calls back into the JavaScript. WebViews are very powerful, and they may be a valuable tool to help you build your application especially if you already have a lot of HTML content. As it happens, we've used exactly this approach in some of the applications we've written.

Divide and Conquer
Years ago I was addicted to a simple game that I played on my then state-of-the-art Pentium-75. In this game, balls would bounce around, and I would try to partition them into small enough spaces so that I could go to the next level where more and more balls would be added. As of a couple of months ago, for the life of me, I couldn't remember the name of this game. So when I sat down to write an application for Android in my 20% time, I thought, why not try to recreate something similar? After completing most of the game and showing it to some of my friends at work, one of them said, "Oh, this reminds me of JezzBall!" Eureka! If working on this game does nothing more than reveal the name of one of the favorite games of my youth, I'll call it a success, but in the meantime, I'm happy to announce that the source of this application, named Divide and Conquer, is now available on apps-for-android.
The game starts with instructions:
and begins simply enough with one ball bouncing around. You drag your finger in a horizontal or vertical gesture on the screen to initiate a line that extends until it reaches the edges:
In each level, once you've shaved off 80% of the original area, you move to the next level. Here's a screen shot of level 6:
If a ball hits a line in progress, you lose a life:
Once you are out of lives, it is game over:
While this game isn't going to win any awards for cutting edge graphics, it demonstrates use of several Android features and APIs:
- custom drawing and animation
- touch input based gesture detection
- overriding the default behavior of the back key in some situations (to pause the game)
- creating custom Dialogs
- configuring an application to be full screen with no title or status bar
- use of the preferences framework
- use of the vibrator API
DivideAndConquerView is a custom View that implements its own onDraw method using the Canvas methods, and gesture detection using onTouchEvent and a helper class DirectionPoint. It keeps track of the state of the game using BallEngine, and reports relevant events back to the main activity of the application, which, in turn, keeps track of and controls the state of the game. The application is configured to be full screen in its AndroidManifest.xml file.

Three new Samples: Triangle, SpriteText and Downloader
I've posted three new open source samples to the apps-for-android project: Triangle, SpriteText and Downloader.
The first two samples, Triangle and SpriteText, show techniques that would be useful to anyone using the OpenGL ES 3D graphics APIs to write Android applications. The samples contain several reusable classes that may eventually be incorporated (in some form) into the SDK. Chief among these is the GLView class, which abstracts the OpenGL ES book-keeping code from the rest of the application. GLView helps handle the extra work OpenGL ES applications have to do when the activity is paused and resumed, and when the display goes to sleep and wakes up. In the Pause/Resume case the OpenGL surface has to be recreated. In the display sleep / wake-up case the entire OpenGL context has to be recreated.
The first sample, Triangle, shows how to use the GLView class and the OpenGL ES 3D library to display a spinning textured triangle. Think of it as the "hello, world" of OpenGL ES apps. Because it's relatively simple, it's a good place to start when experimenting with the OpenGL ES API.
The second sample, SpriteText, shows how to efficiently display screen-aligned text using the GL11Ext.glDrawTexiOES method. SpriteText contains a reusable LabelMaker class for drawing static text and screen-aligned images, as well as a Projector class for finding the 2D screen coordinates corresponding to a 3D point, and a MatrixTrackingGL class for keeping track of the current transformation matrix. Finally, it shows how to use these classes to display a milliseconds per frame counter. A ms/f counter can be helpful for tuning graphics performance.
The third sample, Downloader, shows how to add a downloader activity to your application. The downloader activity runs at the beginning of your application and makes sure that a set of files have been downloaded from a web server to the phone's SD card. Downloader is useful for applications that need more local data than can fit into an .apk file. For example a game could use Downloader to download the game's artwork, sound effects, and level data. The Downloader activity is designed to be a drop-in addition to your application. You customize it by supplying the URL of an XML configuration file which lists the data files that need to be downloaded.

Kooza from Cirque du Soleil - The Best Road Show Yet
The opening act of Kooza is spectacularly choreographed.
Kooza is worth a trip, and the expense for good seats. It is the ultimate spectacle, with both roll-in-the-aisles-laughter from the clowns, and heart-stopping, breath-taking acrobatic acts. Cirque du Soleil is often imitated, but all those second rate companies simply pale in comparison to the real thing, as this traveling edition of Kooza now playing in Boston proves. That includes the the horrible arena shows that Cirque inexplicably sends around the country with Clear Channel Entertainment. If you like beer signs and scoreboards to clutter up your view of the stage, and have very good eyesight, I suppose these horrid arena productions are ok, but my advice is to avoid them like the plague. Most seats are too far away from the stage to see much, and if I wanted to watch them perform on a flat two-dimensional screen, I would rent the DVD.
David Shiner wrote and directed Kooza
Kooza was written and directed by the immensely talented David Shiner, and he has done a magnificent job. You can read my full review at Berkshire Fine Arts, the online magazine
"Cirque du Soleil delivers an unforgettable evening of outrageous clowning, astounding acrobats and colorful spectacle that is best described as "Theatrobatics!" Best of all, Kooza is the newest and funniest of their touring shows and even given the pricey tickets, worth every penny."
Kooza is Clowns, Acrobats and Spectacle
Kooza's run in Boston has just been extended until October 12, and I would not be surprised if there was one more week's extension, since they do not have to be in D.C. until late in the month. Here is the schedule:
Boston, MA
Sept. 5 to Oct. 12
Washington, DC
Oct. 30 to Nov. 30
Atlanta, GA
Jan. 2 to Jan. 25 2009
Baltimore, MD
Spring 2009
New York, NY

A Deafening Silence
I guess its refreshing, in some respects, that theres this interregnum of silence on the issue; the crowd at the RNC, for instance, got whipped up into a real frenzyto the point of attaining what I can only think of as The Most Surreal Moment in a Political Event of Many Surreal Moments: the absurdity of Drill, baby, drill (how did that ever become a rallying cry for the masses????). Given the incendiary tone at the RNC (for which our former mayor can take due credit), I guess in some ways its a blessing that immigration received scant attention there.
Immigration gets some play in both party platforms, however. The Democratic platform acknowledges that immigration contributes to our nations economy, culture, and spirit; and that the system is broken and requires comprehensive reformincluding enforcement and a path to legal status for the undocumented. But in an effort to keep Blue Dog Democrats in the fold, there was no substantiveor even passingdiscussion of this part of the platform at the convention.
The Republican platform views immigration exclusively as a national security matter and leads with concerns about keeping out criminals, terrorists, and drug cartels, and sees enhanced enforcement of existing laws as sufficient to addressing our broken system. Unsurprisingly, the platform outright rejects amnesty, and throws in a range of other recommendations for good measurean English only proposal, increased resources for enforcement, punishing sanctuary cities and so forth. But in an attempt not to scare away Latino voters, the Republicans sidestepped the issue of immigration in St. Paul as adroitly as the Democrats did in Denver. (They also sidestepped the fact that, until recently, their candidate espoused a position on immigration that was more or less what was in the Democratic party platform.)
But there was something deafening in the silence. While the respective candidates at their respective conventions said nothing, immigration agents took Laurel, MS, by storm, detaining 600 apparently undocumented workerssurpassing their previous record haul, in Postville, IA, back in May. While the candidates stood silent, the town of Postville was dealing, three months later, with the loss of a large part of its population the very people who helped to revive a town that for years has been losing its native-born population as the young people move awayand with the shuttering of storefronts on its main street. While the candidates stood silent, Hazleton, PA, saw its opportunistic mayor continue to malign the very community his economic development strategy hinges onthe immigrant workers who fill the jobs in Hazletons industrial park that there arent sufficient local workers to fill. While the candidates stood silent, Riverside, NJ, still hasnt recovered from the divisive immigration battle that took place there and that left Riverside, in the words of one native-born business owner, a ghost town.
Something is seriously askew. If immigration and the current broken system are so tangential that they warrant not an iota of attention at the conventions, how can they be so important that the government marshals all its resources to conduct raids that bring down workers, families, communities, and local economies in one fell swoop?
From 1985 to 2002, spending for detention and removal increased 750%; since 2002, its doubled again. And now the combined 2008 budgets of Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement are nearly $4 billion more than the State Department's.
Last year, the government detained 280,000 immigrants, and deported about the same number.
And none of this warrants discussion?
It could be that in the current climate, weve all got battle fatigue; how else to explain that Postville, where 400 workers were taken in a raid in May, garnered significant media coverage, but just three months later, the arrest of 600 workers in Mississippi warranted just a day or two of coverage? Weve all just become too accustomed to immigration laws that are so out of step with reality that they give rise to the very lawlessness they attempt to enforce against. We've come to accommodate an immigration framework that fails to meet the needs of business, labor, and families, and that ultimately creates the very conditions that we all decry.
Both party platforms put forth their commitment to the rule of law. But if Aristotle said, Law is order, and good law is good order, then clearly the reverse is also true; bad law is disorder. And that is where we are right now. You cannot have 12 million people living in the shadows, acknowledged with a wink and a nod and trotted out as red meat when its politically expedient to do so, and pretend that we are a nation of laws.
But the candidates stood silent.
