NORMAN â" The Westwood golf courseâs resident pro is still without a contract after city officials pulled an agenda item earlier in the week during a Norman City Council meeting that wouldâve granted him an 18-month extension.
The 18-month term is half as long as Lisleâs previous contract, although all other terms remain the same.
Lisle earns $ 39,600 as a full-time city employee and also draws income from the sale of merchandise at the Westwood pro shop.
His counterpart at the Westwood tennis center, David Minihan, had his contract renewed in early May for an additional five years.
Lisle, who was at Tuesdayâs council meeting, declined to comment on his contract situation.
In recent months, city officials have been eyeing the golf course, looking at potential ways to cut costs and streamline operations.
Jud Foster, director of Parks and Recreation, said the city has looked at three options related to the long-term management of Westwood.
The first would be to do nothing and to keep things running the way they are. Today, the course is run by a combination of city employees, contract workers and an outside company that leases space from the city. The restaurant at the course is leased to a private company, which pays rent to the city and a certain portion of revenue if sales exceed a predetermined dollar amount.
A second option is a âturn-key management approach,â something he said has been done at courses in Tulsa and Broken Arrow in recent years.
Foster said the turn-key approach is when a golf course management company comes in and runs the course, developing a contract with the city based on how they decided to run it.
A third option being investigated is the possibility of the city taking over full control of the operations, including the sale of merchandise and the management of the restaurant.
If officials opt for the last option, all workers will become city employees, including the golf pro. The city would have more at stake, which could lead to bigger rewards or bigger losses.
