The First Couple spent a Saturday Evening out, like so many of us, at a play. Not since the Kennedy days have we seen a President and First Lady take so much interest in the arts.

POTUS and FLOTUS flew into New York, not on Air Force One, but on the more economical 12 passenger Gulfstream, in a smart move. They had dinner in the Village (at Blue Hill) before heading to the Belasco Theatre in Midtown to see August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone, a drama about black America in the early 1900's. It tells the story about the residents of a run down boardinghouse who migrated from their Southern sharecropping existence to the promise of the industrialized North.

The cast only learned of the Presidential visit in the morning, and the audience arrived to extra security precautions, but took it all in stride. "When you go to the theatre, you are used to seeing famous people," commented one ticket buyer, "but yeah I'm totally going to stare at them," she said. Meryl Streep sat a few rows from the President, but nobody seemed to notice.

Obama said in a statement to the media that he had promised his wife "during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished."

As might be expected, The Republican National Committee put out a news release titled �Putting on a Show,� which chastised Obama for hopping up to New York for "a night on the town". Of course the RNC somehow forgot to mention the record of their own President Bush who used the far more expensive to operate Air Force One to fly back and forth to his "ranch" in Crawford more than 60 times.

Hardly anyone paid attention to their silly side show. Obama sprung for the theater tix out of his own pocket.

Android Developer Challenge 2 announced by Google

Google has just announced the Android Developer Challenge 2 (ADC 2), the second edition of the competition that should (and will) bring new and cool applications for the Android OS � which has now reached version 1.5.

Participants can develop apps, evaluate/score others� apps, or both.

The ADC 2 will debut in August, when developers will be able to submit their applications. These applications will be �judged� by users who have access to Android Market, via a special ADC 2 app that lets them download, test and rate the submissions.

There will be 20 finalist applications, for 10 distinct categories:

• Place sugar in a large saucepan and stir constantly over a medium heat until sugar changes to light caramel then add in water, tea bags, cinnamon stick and bay leaf. Bring to boil and simmer for 3 minutes. Strain and set aside.
• Add the toasted bread slices into the prepared hot syrup and stir well until bread is mashed and absorbed all the syrup. Keep aside to cool to room temperature.
• Meanwhile, add NESTLɮ Cream , milk and corn flour to a large saucepan, bring to boil with constant stirring then simmer for 1-2 minutes or until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir with orange blossom water. Allow to cool at room temperature. (Cover with cling film to avoid the top drying up).
• Spread the bread mixture evenly over a large platter.
• Stir the cooled cream well until very smooth and spread it evenly over the bread mixture.

Serving tips : Sprinkle the top with crushed pistachio and toasted almond slices and decorate with orange blossom in syrup.

It's funny how a new games system can actually alter our speech patterns. As I hunt through the App Store now looking for free games, I come to realise how many new words I've been taught since it launched.

'App' seems to have been accepted as a preferable alternative to 'software', while fiddling with capitalisation is now perfectly acceptable as long as the capital letter is preceded with a lower case 'i'.

And even though my spell checker still doesn't like it, 'Lite' is undeniably the buzz word of the iGeneration (you see! Even I'm doing iT now). Even though it's not actually a word, its meaning is understood by every iPhone and iPod touch user across the world.

If something's 'Lite', it's free, but has reduced functionality and, for the most part, has a full version counterpart that you can pay for.

Of course, we could just say 'demo', but that's not yet been approved or copyrighted by Apple, so for the time being we're going to have to stick with Lite.

'Free' is a word that's not going to be so easily put aside, of course. In the article, he writes: �The application itself should be free, yet require a subscription to be useful.� As the title of this piece states, free should only be free once it is paid for. Confused? Sorry, I thought it was catchy. The key to the free app lies in a tidbit of information that is mentioned at the Apple (AAPL) iPhone 3.0 announcement where they mention �A free app stays free�. If the application is given away for free, Sirius XM (SIRI) loses a variety of potential income sources.

1. Subscription Revenue - Obviously, one of the key benefits of the iPhone app is going to be to drive people to become subscribers. When you buy from the iTunes store, it charges the purchase to your credit card already on file. The beauty of the iTunes store however, is that it is a proven fact that many press the �buy� button without really thinking about the cost involved because they are not having to put in credit card information every single time they make a purchase. The easier it is, the more likely they will be to purchase it.
2. World Wide distribution - Currently, Sirius XM requires you to be a resident of the United States in order to sign up even for an internet feed. I am sure that one of the biggest reasons they do this is because in order to �sell� something, the government is going to want to tax it. Sirius XM would have to set up tax collection systems for every single country that somebody decides to subscribe from. What a pain! Enter iTunes. Apple has already set up these agreements with over 50 countries where their iPhones are sold. When an app sells, Apple takes a 30% revenue share, and the company gets the other 70%. From Apple�s 30%, they pay all of the credit card processing fees, all of the taxes, and all of the server fees associated with the download of the app. Barring any international issues with select channels, etc, this would be a huge plus for SiriusXM. The show lampoons both the Nazis and the Nazi insignia. However, in Berlin as in all of Germany, the swastika is a no-no because of its historic implications. Besides, Hitler himself sat in this very theatre, in the F�hrer's box, and so the twisted cross symbol was replaced with a verbogener logo, that of a twisted pretzel.

Now this show - the first collaboration between the Berksire's Colonial Theatre and C-R Productions (an arm of the Cohoes Music Hall) - will tap dance its way into the heart of the Berkshires as it arrives in Pittsfield. And what an undertaking it is!

500 Costumes, 70 wigs, 30 volunteers, 28 actors, 8 musicians, 4 fly operators, 2 spot lights all in one theatre for one show. This recipe makes the largest, most extravagant musical in C-R Productions six seasons. We have our fingers crossed that this is the start of a beautiful long-term marriage for those of us who are the audience.


C-R Productions brings its version of Mel Brooks� The Producers to the Colonial in just a matter of days, since it opens on June 4th for four performances. If you have been playing Rip Van Winkle, you might wonder what this strange show is about. Nazis? Well actually it's about two producers, named Bialystock and Bloom. Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony� Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. And it lampoons everything in site, from greedy producers to gay directors to elderly widows waiting to be fleeced.

The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way irresponsibly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive Springtime For Hitler), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.

Make note of Ryan Lammer, a member of the ensemble, and a veteran of D.C.'s Arena Stage (we love that company!) where he was in I Love A Piano
The cast is filled with both familiar and unfamiliar singers, dancers and actors and is one of the youngest I can remember in these parts. My friend Gail Burns has told me to keep an eye out for David Beditz as Max Bailystock and Matthew Wade as obsessive-compulsive-depressive accountant Leo Bloom. She also reports that Jennifer Elise Davis is gorgeous as Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson. To quote a line from her Cohoes review, "No one seems to be having more fun in this show than Jerry Christakos as the ridiculously gay and completely incompetent director Roger De Bris. Whether he is charging around looking butch in a sequined gown and heels, or skipping about as a hopelessly effeminate F�hrer, he is hilarious."

I plan to go opening night and will write a report the next day for Berkshire Fine Arts.

Calling all developers for Android Developer Challenge 2!

I'm excited to announce the second Android Developer Challenge (ADC)! The first challenge was a huge success with over 1,700 entries that resulted in 50 excellent winners. With the recent release of Android 1.5, as well as the availability of devices in multiple markets around the world, I'm pleased to announce the second ADC.

We've expanded ADC 2 to involve a very important part of the Android community—the users who will be running these applications. Users of Android-powered devices with Android Market will be able to download a special Android judging application and use it to download and rank applications submitted to the Challenge. The results from this round will determine the top ranking applications in each of the 10 categories. These top applications will then be ranked by a combination of users and a panel of Google selected judges through a similar process as the first round to determine the final winners.

I've already seen a lot of great apps on Android and I look forward to seeing even more innovative and unexpected cool apps that will come out of this Challenge! For more details on ADC 2, please see the official site. Start your engines and good luck!

Carrot Pie Recipe

Ingredients - serves 8

For the crust:

• 2� cups digestive biscuits or 250 g, crumbled
• � cup butter or 100 g, melted
• For the filling:
• 2 tablespoons butter, melted
• 2 medium carrots or 300 g, peeled and finely grated
• � cup water or 125 ml
• 1 tin NESTLɮ Sweetened Condensed Milk or 397 g
• 2 eggs
• 2 tablespoons rose water
• 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
• 1 cup ground almonds or 100 g

Preparation

• Combine biscuit crumbs and butter in a bowl, rub the ingredients to combine well, press pastry over the base and sides of a 26cm loose bottom tart tin. Set aside.
• Place butter and carrot in a large saucepan, stir over medium heat for 4-5 minutes or until carrot is tender. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
• Place the cooled carrot mixture in a kitchen food processor, add water NESTLɮ Sweetened Condensed Milk , eggs, vanilla, rose water and ground almond then process for 2 minutes or until smooth.
• Spoon mixture over the prepared tart tin. Bake in an 180�C preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until its firm from the middle.
• Allow to cool then place in fridge for 2 hours before serving.

For our second post in our series on Android UI, we're releasing our Icon Design Guidelines and an Android Icon Templates Pack. These should make it a lot easier for you (or your designer) to develop all the icons your applications need, so they fit with the other icons in the Android environment.

The Icon Design Guidelines document describes how to design and export icons that fit within the Android framework. It includes a wealth of detail about icons in the Home screen, menus, the status bar, tabs, dialogs, and lists.

The Android Icon Templates Pack is a collection of template designs, filters, and settings that make it easier for you to create icons that conform to the general specifications given in this Guidelines document. We recommend downloading the template pack archive before you get started with your icon design.

The Templates Pack provides templates in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator file formats, which preserves the layers and design treatments we used when creating the standard icons for the Android platform. You can load the template files into any compatible image-editing program, although your ability to work directly with the layers and treatments may vary based on the program you are using.

Japanese 3G Kindle Hands-on

Toshiba�s Biblio is touted as an e-book reader. Instead of an electronic paper display like ones found in established e-book readers, such as Amazon�s Kindle, the biblio makes do with a traditional 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen with an extra-long 480�960 resolution. The advantage here is that the Biblio can render crisp color images rather than grayscale, but the e-ink display is more battery friendly and is said to cause less eye strain.

It features 7GB of user-accessible storage on board for books, and also has a slide-out dynamic keyboard that can display a numeric pad in the portrait orientation or full QWERTY in landscape. Books and other content can be downloaded thanks to a Wi-Fi connection. Opera Mobile 9.5 browser is preloaded onto the handset, which includes YouTube and Flash support, as well as AJAX scripting. Moreover it has a 5.1Mpix camera module, and an electronic dictionary module.

Sadly, there�s no word on pricing or availability for the device.

Nokia N900 Internet Tablet

Rumor has it on the next Nokia Internet Tablet referred to as the N900, Rover,coming this year to T-Mobile USA. MobileCrunch has published what is believed to be specifications of Nokia�s upcoming Internet Tablet, possibly called the N900. The specs they report are no surprise: They�re a combination of the existing N810, some features of the N97.

The N900 comes with features like: HSPA, WiFi and GPS connectivity, Maemo 5, 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen, a 5 megapixels Carl Zeiss camera with dual-LED flash and 1GB total virtual memory. The device is said to be powered by Texas Instruments� OMAP3430 processor, the same as that in the Palm Pre. The new tablet is believed to be powered by Nokia�s Maemo5 Linux-based operating system. Additionally, the Rover does not appear to feature the navi-keys found on the slide-out layer of the N97.

Tablet is supposedly planned to be announced in June, with availability in August or September.

Toshiba TG01 coming to NTT DoCoMo, Telefonica

Two giant carriers Spain�s Telef�nica and Japan�s NTT DoCoMo will debut Toshiba TG01 Windows Mobile Phone in Japanese and Spanish market starting June 2009, respectively. The Japanese version, called PRO T-01A, will arrive sometime in June, while Spain will get the TG01 in July. This high-end smartphone offers a huge 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen display, a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, Windows Mobile 6.1 OS (upgradeable to 6.5), 3.15MP camera with autofocus,a 3D user interface, Wi-Fi, GPS and a microSD card slot. Pricing info is still unknown at the moment. In addition, both companies are also planning to collaborate for developing �possible services and applications for open OS handsets.�

Preparation

• Wash burghul and drain then cover and set it aside for 1 hour.
• Combine in a mixing bowl the prepared burghul, minced beef, onion, mint, salt and spices. Mince the ingredients 3 times using the meat electric mincer (add some cold water to have soft dough if needed). Cover and set in the fridge.
• Heat oil in a pan, add onion and cook until tender. Add the minced lamb and stir until cooked and brown in color. Add the crumbled MAGGI� Mutton Bouillon cubes, Arabic seven spices, pine seeds, dried mint and pomegranate molasses and stir to combine well.
• With wet hands, take medium sized pieces of the kibbeh dough mixture, form each portion into an oval shape, making a space in the center by pushing your finger through from one end.
• Stuff with some cooked lamb mixture, close by pressing firmly.
• Fry the kibbeh in hot deep oil until golden brown.
• Serve hot with green salad and fresh yogurt.

• Turn out the first piece of dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead the dough and roll it out into a greased 32cm round oven tray.
• Carefully spread the meat mixture over the dough.
• Roll out the second piece of dough and place it over the meat to cover. Tightly press the edges and brush the top with the extra egg.
• Bake in a 170�C oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and the meat is cooked.
