GPS Nokia Map N96

Nokia has unveiled Nokia N96 the much awaited successor to the N95 8GB. It looks and feels like a N95 dressed up in a N81�s design. It runs on S60 3rd edition, FP2. Nokia N96 is a quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) handset with dual-band HSDPA(850/2100MHz) support for worldwide coverage. It also supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g.

A major change in the N96 is the 16 GB storage plus memory card support in N96. The N96 also sports a DVB-H digital TV receiver and an innovative kickstand for watching videos on the large 2.8" QVGA display. N96 also adds a pair of gaming keys to the multimedia cluster on top slide panel.

The 5MP auto focus camera with Carl Zeiss lens now sports a much more powerful dual LED flash that also functions as a video light. The camera now allows users to geo tag all photos using the built in A-GPS module. The A-GPS module is now bundled along with Nokia Maps 2.0.

Nokia has dropped the excellent xenon flash introduced in N82 in favour of the double led as they consider the N96 as more of a video centric device. The battery rating has also been dropped down to 950mAh which was attributed to the highly optimized power consumtion in the N96. The N96 includes a dedicated audio signal processor inorder to reduce power consumtion and deliver better audi0 output. It has also left out the 3D graphics accelerator present in N95 and N82.

The USB Transfer rates have improved a lot and the handset still sports a 3.5mm Audio/TV out socket and A2DP stereo audio. The whole package weighs around 126g. The N96 is expected to start shipping in Q3 2008.

Nokia N95 as a 3G Modem on a Mac: Connected outside of the City

When we leave the city and the safety of an almost constant connection to the Internet there are times when we need to check our email, run a blog post or just catch up with some work.

Having experienced some time out of town this weekend we still needed to be in touch with the outside server world and so turned to our trusty Nokia N95 and its built in 3G modem.

We have been Mac users now for a month, having finally jumped ship from windows after 10 years as a result one to many Vista nightmares. Set up was surprisingly easy with us connecting to the Internet via our N95 and Vodafone in under 5 minutes.

All that is needed is a quick trip to the Nokia page for the isync plugin and then the simple question of enabling bluetooth on both the N95 and the Mac.

Running through 'Set Up Bluetooth Device' was straightforward with a screen requesting user name and password for our carrier - in our case Vodafone. We picked up the details from Ross Barkmen's GPRS Info Page which carries usernames and passwords for most services providers around the world.

With the password in place it was simply a case of opening our network preferences and connecting via Bluetooth.

It enabled us to post a couple of entries today and finally feel connected regardless of location. All we need do now is move from Vodafone who allow (in their words) a 'massive 120mb per month' of data to T Mobiles unlimited Web 'n' Walk that seems to be getting all the hype recently.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?

For many months (ever since I first heard about the N95 in Oct '06) I have firmly believed that the N95 was (going to be) the best mobile phone that was currently available. For many months I have had to read the forum comments from the uneducated, inexperienced and sometimes just plain ignorant. Comments about how unstable, badly made and lacking in some minute function the phone is. How much better certain zPhones are (I can't bring myself to type the name of such a heap of glitsy Hog Sh*te). How this was needed or that was needed. How we all needed to wait for the N95 8Gb to have all our prayers answered. How outdated (?) the N95 was or that it was superceeded. Etc, Etc, Etc. Blah, Blah, Blah!

Well, I now believe in magic, because with Ver.20 firmware update Nokia have just created the nearest thing to perfection that you can put in the palm of your hand! How sick do N95 8Gb owners feel? (maybe a few upgraded?) Don't know! Don't care! How totally depressed do zPhone owners feel? (maybe a few regret the folly of their impatient eyecandy lust?) Don't know! Don't care! How bad do all the N95 knockers feel now they know what a wonderfully superb piece of modern progressive communications technology, is the allmighty N95. Th N95 Classic befits it's name!

3GSM: Nokia, Vodafone in Software Tie-up

Nokia and Vodafone have collaborated on the development of S60 software on Symbian OS, with the release of the first Vodafone specific software package to all S60 licensees. The S60 platform and the Vodafone specific software offer an integrated reference implementation that enables Vodafone to roll out innovative new services to customers across a range of different handsets without having to develop a range of different software designs. Samsung and Nokia are expected to be the first handset vendors to ship devices incorporating this software in 2007.

"Vodafone's customers will benefit as we are able to get our services out faster and more cost-effectively on a wide range of devices from several handset brands. Handset vendors will benefit from saving development costs while maintaining the ability to differentiate on additional functionality and industrial design," said Jens Schulte-Bockum, Vodafone's Global Director of Terminals.

"We are thrilled to work with Vodafone and Nokia in introducing leading-edge smartphones to European customers. I'm very proud to introduce SGH-i520, which will be our first model built on S60 with all of the latest multimedia features and high speed data connectivity (HSDPA). It is very exciting to lead the trend towards open mobile software platforms with these leading brands. Starting with i520, we will introduce further enhanced lineup based on S60 with Samsung's differentiated multimedia features," said Chul-hwan Lee, Senior Vice President of Mobile R&D Team, Samsung Electronics. Samsung's SGH-i520 will be available to Vodafone customers during the first quarter of this year.

The collaboration between Vodafone, S60 and selected handset vendors also covers joint marketing activities aimed at Vodafone's customers.

Nokia N95 on the map

Nokia has announced a free mapping solution which can be downloaded to smartphones like its GPS enabled N95 From tomorrow, smartphone owners can download Nokia's mapping and navigation solution for free. The smart2go navigation application offers mapping and routing in over 150 countries and has support for full turn-by-turn sat nav in over 30 countries. The application also allows people to see where they are on a map, search from a database of over 15 million points of interest (POI) and create routes to get them there.

Nokia trailed rivals in coming out with folding designs in 2004 and last year missed the trend for slim phones. It has since reshaped its design operations and crafted the N95 model so it slides to the left as well as the right, revealing different keypads, an effort to leapfrog competitors

Nokia plans to install the application on all future N-series phones - like the GPS enabled N95 - under the name Nokia maps. From February 10, the application will be available to download to selected Nokia Series 60 phones and Windows Mobile 5.0 handsets and will then roll out to other Nokia Series 60 phones, Series 40 phones, plus PocketPC, Linux and other Windows Mobile devices.

Nokia N95 GPS Tracking Google Earth

We went into Vodafone a couple of days ago after our old Sony phone finally gave up the ghost and came out with a Nokia N95. The N95 has been reviewed on many sites for its various multi-media/wi-fi/photographic abilities but what opened up our thoughts to move over to a Nokia was the built in GPS.

If you own a N95 one of the first things you should do is download the recently released free application 'Sports Tracker' from Nokia. Sports Tracker is aimed at the sports or general user on foot or cycling and more importantly it provides full route tracking with the ability to upload to Google Earth.

The ability to create tracks for Google Earth/Maps in a small portable portable phone is impressive. On our first test run we used the Sports Tracker application on a drive across Berkshire (its meant to be used for running or cycling but it does the same job in a car). The N95 performed well considering it was placed well inside the car, rather than on the windscreen as with most in-car GPS systems. After you have reached your destination you can simply choose to 'Save as Google Earth' and then transfer to your PC.

Once in Google Earth a variety of information points are provided on your travel speed as well as your highest and lowest altitudes. We have only touched on the basic level of functionality here but the N95 GPS comes highly recommended, it is definitely a step forward in Google Earth tracking for the general consumer.

cClock v1.18 for symbian 3rd

cClock is a screensaver that run on Nokia symbian S60 3rd edition.
It feature big font and prevent deep power saver mode on Nokia 6120 classic and Nokia 6110.

Option
If "Power saving mode" is "No", the screensaver will activate the screen for every two minutes. This is to prevent 6120 Classic or 6110 Navigator go into deep power saving mode. This will cause more power drain on the phone.

The option "Backlight" if is "Yes", it will turn on backlight on any key that you press.

"Whole background" if is "No", it will turn of portion of the LCD that is unused. It will only work on some model like 6120 Classic.

"Moving speed" will let you configure the moving speed of cClock.

"Always on top" if it is "No", you can see the "desktop" or program on top if you press any key. If it is "Yes", you will see "cClock" stay on until you unlock the keyboard.

"Icon" will display keylocked, sms, misscall and profile icon.

The "Chinese calendar" option only will work for phone that support Chinese character.

"Battery and network" option will show battery and network strength. ***** WARNING ***** It will drain more battery power in some model. (N73, E70, E50)

Android SDK m5-rc14 now available

On behalf of the entire Android team, I'm happy to let you know that an updated version of the Android SDK – we're calling it m5-rc14 – is now available. Today, we're continuing the early look at the Android SDK that we started back in November by providing updates to the Android APIs and the developer tools based, in part, on the great feedback and suggestions developers have been giving us. We're excited about the progress that we've made and look forward to making additional updates in the future as the platform evolves towards production-readiness.

There are a couple of changes in m5-rc14 I'd like to highlight:

• New user interface - As I mentioned when we introduced the m3 version of the Android SDK, we're continuing to refine the UI that's available for Android. m5-rc14 replaces the previous placeholder with a new UI, but as before, work on it is still in-progress.
• Layout animations - Developers can now create layout animations for their applications using the capabilities introduced in the android.view.animation package. Check out the LayoutAnimation*.java files in the APIDemos sample code for examples of how this works.
• Geo-coding - android.location.Geocoder enables developers to forward and reverse geo-code (i.e. translate an address into a coordinate and vice-versa), and also search for businesses.
• New media codecs - The MediaPlayer class has added support for the OGG Vorbis, MIDI, XMF, iMelody, RTTL/RTX, and OTA audio file formats.
• Updated Eclipse plug-in - A new version of ADT is available and provides improvements to the Android developer experience. In particular, check out the new Android Manifest editor.
