Hello Friend!

This past weekend was a great opportunity to drag out the snowsuit and spend some time outside.  What I had forgotten was how absolutely exhausting it is to get an 18 month old bundled up for a twenty minute jaunt into the frozen tundra.  She couldn't move, so completely bundled beyond belief.  Riley had a blast sledding and building snow castles while Sydney was just memorized by the glistening snow.  While they played quietly for a couple minutes, I couldn't help but remember the very first Winter we used that snowsuit, which seems so long ago.

Thank you, old snowsuit - you've served us well!

Good thing we don't have a third because little Miss Messy Sydney is not quite as tidy as Miss Riley was back then...

Enjoy your weekend everybody!
Don't forget, the giveaway ends this Sunday at 7pm EST.  I'll post the results Monday!

Grandma's Little Lilly Giveaway

Yesterday I bragged about my newest coupon organizer from Grandma's Little Lilly on Etsy.

Now is your chance to win your very own item from her shop.

Here's what you do - visit the shop, let me know which item you would choose to be your very own and what is your favorite part of grocery shopping because well, it's not that much fun and maybe if you share your secrets, I'll find it more enjoyable!  Mine is when I'm passing through the bakery and smell the fresh bread coming out of the oven.  No, those little bakeries are not healthy and most of the items aren't even fresh but there is just something about the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven that makes it a little more enjoyable....

Now head on over to Grandma's Little Lilly and let me know what item you heart the most!  The contest will run from today thru Sunday.
I'll post the results Monday morning and let you know which lucky winner will be receiving a special package from Grandma!

Romeo and Juliet too "Impure" for Nashville, Shakespeare Censored

Tennessee, home of great ribs and backward thinking, is in the news again. This time its citizens demanding that Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet be censored. Seems the 400 year old play is too racy for its high school students. This was the claim of a group of self-appointed censors who found the Bard of Avon a bit too bawdy for Music City, U.S.A. They requested a number of cuts to Shakespeare's text in order to tone down the play he wrote. The theatre company refused and went with what the Bard wrote instead of a watered down version to please the nabobs.

Most of the upset is was about some of the bawdier scenes with Mercutio and the Nurse. But Romeo and Juliet also shows two teenagers disobeying their parents, and this gets some of the Nashville fundamentalists in a tizzy. A woman who identified herself as Val, a home-school teacher complained that she "struggled being here with my son. The sexuality was too much. Our children need to be more pure." The full story is in The Toronto Star.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you can enjoy The Acting company's splendid production of the classic at the Colonial Theatre on February 12.

Meantime, chalk up another one for Tennessee where the Butler Act was passed by fundamentalist Christians in 1925 banning the teaching of the theory of evolution in all public schools and colleges. This of course led to the famous Scopes (Monkey) Trial which made the state a laughingstock, and the anti-evolutionists haven't stopped trying to turn the clock back to the dark ages since.

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm a coupon clipper...

I've always liked to save a little cash, who doesn't?  The recent downward swing of the economy has only made me want to hold onto my little Benjamins (well, Washingtons) tighter.  I'm that woman you see in the grocery store, completely frazzled, with a too big baby strapped into the front carrier and another kid in tow.  I spend my time digging coupons out of my bag, comparing prices, dancing down the aisle to the songs of the '70s and fighting off little hands who want to "help" with the coupon selection.  Ah yes, it's quite an adventure when these three ladies hit the local market.  People smile or look away in disgust as I think to myself, "There has go to be an easier way!"

I've tried different methods of collecting and sorting coupons: white envelopes, bags and the lovely paper coupon organizer that ripped after a month of use.  I'll never forget last Winter when, in the gripping cold, my entire organizer flipped backwards and a confetti of coupons littered the parking lot of Shaws.

I was going to give up!

Then, I found GRANDMA'S LITTLE LILLY, an adorable shop run by Rhonda who opened her shop last Spring after the birth of her first Granddaughter.  Sewing for years,  she opened her store to make quality, affordable items that children, mothers and families would find useful.  The coupon organizers that she constructs are amazing and available in a variety of modern, classic and unique patterns.   They are user friendly and attach to your grocery cart so you can stay organized and productive (if there is such a thing) while shopping.  Handmade with quality, cotton fabric, these organizers are machine washable and won't fall apart like those flimsy plastic or paper coupon organizers.  She also includes dividers and labels for you!  In addition to the coupon organizers, she makes handmade crayon totes for kids, eco friendly snack baggies and fabric envelopes.

So, there you have it!  Oh, and I'll admit, I'm still that frazzled woman in the grocery store with the two kiddos but now, I'm dancing down the aisles with a cool coupon organizer...

Check back tomorrow for a giveaway from Grandma's Little Lilly!

Free iPhone Calls, Free iPhone SMS: Google Voice now on the iPhone

Google has released an entirely Web-based version of its service that works on the iPhone as well as Palms Pre and Pixi handsets.

Apple may still officially be pondering whether it should approve Googles Google Voice app for iPhone, but theres finally good news: Google has released an entirely Web-based version of the service (at m .google.com/voice). It works on the iPhone as well as Palms Pre and Pixi handsets, and brings a large chunk of the functionality of the native Voice apps for Android and BlackBerry to your phones browser.

This new version, like mobile Gmail, is among the most app-like browser services Ive ever seen, period, letting you dial from your Google contacts list or a keypad, read and listen to messages, send text messages, and configure the app right within mobile Safari. When you make calls using it, the person who answers sees your Google Voice number, not the real one associated with your phone: Google makes an outgoing call from the iPhone, then reroutes it over a line of its own.

Theres only so far that a Web-based telephony app can go. On Android and BlackBerry, Google Voice can insert itself as your default phone interface, and it gets access to the contacts stored on your phone. On the iPhone, it stays a secondary interface and cant see your local contacts. (You can, however, use Google Sync to sync your phones contacts with your Google Account.) When you make an outgoing call, your iPhone confirms you want to do so and shows Googles routing number rather than the one youre really callingkind of confusing. And while the interface for wrangling messages is a vast improvement on the rudimentary one in the old Web-based Google Voice, it still send you out of Safari and into QuickTime when you want to listen to a message.

There are so few surprises these days and what an absolute perfect gift to give one another after nine long months!

Guthrie Family and Friends Stage February 14 Haiti Benefit at the Colonial

When the Guthrie family gathers together with a few friends, it can be quite impressive.

After the wonderfully successful James Taylor benefit for Haiti which raised over $500,000 - and had ticket prices from $100-1000, there is second major Berkshire event, this time at popular prices at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield.

Artists from the Berkshires and surrounding cities will come together to show solidarity and help bring money and more awareness to the devastation from the earthquake in Haiti. The momentous tragedy in Haiti generated subsequent shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry in the United States. Artists and venues have been searching for ways to help the victims by tapping the generosity of our friends and neighbors. We are grateful to the Taylors for their very generous leadership earlier this week. We are pleased to help our dear friends the Guthrie family whose concert at The Colonial Theatre on Valentines Day will make it possible for concerned citizens, at every economic level, to participate in a musical event to raise funds to assist in the rescue of the people of Haiti.

Tickets for the Sunday, February 14 performance at 7 PM are $25 and $15 and can be purchased in person at the Colonial Ticket Office at 111 South Street Monday-Friday 10AM-5PM, performance Saturdays 10AM-2PM, by calling (413) 997-4444 or online at www.TheColonialTheatre.org

Android Developer Labs World Tour

Late last year, we held a series of developer labs to give you a chance to ask questions and play with some new hardware. One of the most common questions we received was, "When are you going to visit my city?" It's a good question, and we're pleased to answer it today.

The Android team is embarking on a world tour, which will include cities in Europe, North America, and Asia.

At each stop, we'll be delivering an update on the state of the Android platformincluding a look at the latest Android hardware. It's a great opportunity to meet like-minded Android app developers, play with the latest Android devices, test your apps, and ask Android team members any questions you might have. You can find out more on the Android Developer Lab site.

Here's the line-up of Android Developer Lab locations for February and March 2010:

North America

  • Austin, Texas Feb 4
  • Seattle, Washington Feb 8
  • Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Feb 8
  • Washington, D.C. Feb 9
  • Mountain View, California Feb 10
  • Cambridge, Massachusetts Feb 11
  • New York, New York Feb 12

Europe

  • London, UK Feb 2
  • Paris, France Feb 8
  • Berlin, Germany Feb 10
  • Zurich, Switzerland Feb 12
  • Madrid, Spain Feb 13

Asia

  • Singapore Feb 28
  • Taipei, Taiwan March 3
  • Hong Kong March 5

If you'd like to attend, you'll need to request a spot by February 1st. Space is limited, so please wait for an email to confirm that you have a spot in the lab.

While we're on the road, we're also going to stop by and speak at the following local Android user groups:

  • Stockholm, Sweden Feb 4
  • London, UK Feb 5
  • Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 6

We're looking forward to meeting you in person!

Android at the 2010 Game Developers Conference

2009 has been a great year for Android Market. With the support of developers like you, Android Market now has more than 20,000 applications. Of these applications, games have proven to be particularly popular with Android users. Seven of the ten most popular paid applications on Android Market are games, so there's a significant opportunity for game developers as the number of Android devices continues to grow at a rapid pace.

To better support this trend, we are increasing our support of Android game development. As a first step, we will be presenting a number of Android sessions at the Game Developers Conference on March 9th and 10th in San Francisco. The sessions will be technical and will include everything you need to know about Android game development in Java or C++. Engineers from the Android team will also be available to answer your questions. Whether you are new to the platform or already have games in development, we would love to meet you face-to-face, answer your questions, and see what you're working on. Be sure to keep checking the GDC site because we'll be adding more sessions.

But that's not all. Google and GDC will also be providing complimentary Android phones to attendees who register for All Access or Tutorials and Summits passes by the Early Bird deadline of February 4, 2010. Qualified attendees will receive either a Nexus One or a Verizon Droid by Motorola, so they can quickly apply what they learn from the various Android sessions. You can find more details about the Android phone offer on the GDC site.

Our goal is to make it as easy as possible to develop awesome games for Android, and this is a first step. Hope to see you at GDC!

30 Years of Shear Madness - Will it Never End?

Cheers for 30 Years of Shear Madness! (l to r and back to front) Boston cast members Christopher Robin Cook, Patrick Shea, Jennifer Ellis, Ellen Colton, Michael Fennimore and Richard Snee. Paul Lyden photo.

Shear Madness, the comedy whodunit that holds the Guinness record as the longest-running play in the history of the American theater, will celebrate its 30th Anniversary at The Charles Playhouse Stage II on Friday, January 29, 2009 (the shows 12,580th performance). I have seen and totally enjoyed it a half dozen times, and for those of us in the hill country, there is an interesting fact: This show began not far away, in Lake George, and its creators, Marilyn Abrams and Bruce Jordan, live in Latham, New York. And you can bet that lots of the actors appearing in it have trod the boards in Williamstown, Lenox, Pittsfield and Stockbridge. How's that for a local connection!

Marilyn Abrams and Bruce Jordan modesetly accept full responsibility for three decades of madness.

Twenty years before shows like Tony and Tina's Wedding, Bruce Jordan discovered how much fun it is to involve the audience in the production. That's what sets Shear Madness apart from all the other long running plays - it varies each night, as the plot changes with audience input. Back in Lake George, where it began, they started experimenting with the formula. " When the audience got to question the suspects, the suspects would try to defer having to answer some of those questions through humor -- so that is where the little egg of humor began," says Jordan.

The show soon was playing in Boston on Warrenton Street, and word of mouth was sensational. It became a favorite (and still is) with groups and lots of folks who normally don't attend theatre. Millions have seen it not only in Boston, but in more than 40 cities and 85 international productions. Still an impressive 1.8 million have bought tickets at the little Charles Playhouse alone.

(pictured l to r) Nick Rossetti (Michael Fennimore) and Tony Whitcomb (Patrick Shea) in Shear Madness, the hilarious interactive whodunit. Paul Lyden photo.

The legendary Boston production is set in a Newbury Street salon, and engages locals and visitors alike as armchair detectives to help solve the scissor-stabbing murder of a famed concert pianist who lives above the unisex hairstyling salon. The show combines up-to-the-minute improvisational humor and a mixture of audience sleuthing. To keep it fresh it also incorporates frequent references to the latest media scandals and local news items.

We love to be on the cutting edge, said director Michael Fennimore. Our goal is to have 30 new jokes and clues in the show for the 30th Anniversary night. Our actors are such talented improvisers they love to create something fresh and funny at every show.

"Mrs. Shubert on the phone." Seen here are Nick Rossetti (Michael Fennimore), Tony Whitcomb (Patrick Shea), Mrs Shubert (Ellen Colton), Mike Thomas (Christopher Robin Cook), Barbara DeMarco (Jennifer Ellis), and Edward Lawrence (Richard Snee). Paul Lyden photo.

The Stats: The Boston production has employed over 150 Equity actors (14,800 weeks of work) in its 30-year history. The show has gone through nine barber chairs, 96 blow dryers, 270 bottles of stage blood, 198 hairbrushes, 1320 cans of hairspray, 1560 bottles of nail polish, and more than 13,000 cans of shaving cream.

Shear Madness returned to its Lake George Dinner Theatre roots in 2007 with a fresh producton.

The History: In 1978, Abrams and Jordan - the shows creators, producers and original cast members - first performed a serious version of the play based on Scherenschnitt, written by German writer and psychologist Paul Portner, in Lake George, New York. Jordan, the original director, sensed the comic possibilities of the piece and turned it into the topical spoof, Shear Madness. Because they were on stage each night, Abrams says they experienced the magical chemistry between the actors and the audience.

The audience response to Shear Madness was so enthusiastic that Jordan and Abrams decided to purchase the world stage, screen and television rights to the play. Cranberry Productions (as in, they are quick to explain, What else goes with a turkey?) was created to nurture the hit that they had cultivated.

With complete financial and artistic control over the show, they now had an enormous project on their hands. Based on the encouragement they received from New England visitors to Lake George, they decided that Shear Madness just might work well in Boston. So after more than two years honing the comedy, Abrams and Jordan moved their little show to The Charles Playhouse. The rest, as they say, is history.

Why?

I like to think I keep a tidy house.  Nothing super extravagant but clean and orderly.  So, when we acquired our third (yes, third) tent over the holidays, beads of sweat appeared on my brow.

"This is a tent for the bed", I was told.

Well guess what?

My sassy one would prefer not to sleep inside of something, because then she couldn't see her puppies and her puppies "protect her" at night.

"I would prefer to use this as a tent", she insisted.

...and guess where this tent resides?  My bedroom, of course! My peaceful, calm, sanctuary where I can go if I need to escape from it all.

So, this is where I'll go to escape the madness of everyday but I'll close the curtains of course!

Enjoy the weekend everybody!
