Amber Portwood, one of the stars of the MTV reality series âTeen Mom,â has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to two felony domestic battery charges.
The 20-year-old stood accused of hitting ex-fiance Gary Shirley in front of their baby daughter. Portwood spent a day in jail last December and faced up to three years in jail if convicted.
As part of her sentence, the judge ordered Portwood to get her high school diploma, attend 30 days of inpatient therapy and put $ 10,000 in a college fund for her two-year-old daughter, Leah Shirley. The judge dropped the felony child neglect charge against Portwood, the Associated Press reported.
Portwood was charged after an episode of the show featured her striking Shirley, an incident that was apparently repeated multiple times.Â
âOn August 14, 2009â¦Portwood shoved Shirley against a wall, slapped him on the face and choked him,â Detective Mitch Carroll of the Anderson police department told ABC News Indianapolis affiliate WRTV. âThe incident was witnessed by the coupleâs one-year-old child, who sat in a child seat on a nearby bed.â
âI have no idea why I hurt Gary,â Portwood told MTV in an interview last September. âI never notice how bad I am until I see it. I feel so terrible and itâs like, âDid I really do that?â âWhat the hell was I doing?â I donât treat him like the way I feel. I just go a lot father than most people would. I have a lot of problems, plus I donât care about myself, so itâs like, itâs whatever happens, happens. I hate it.â
