Android 1.6 NDK is available for download
Android 1.6 NDK, release 1 is available for download Today is a companion to the SDK that provides tools to generate and embed native ARM machine code within your application packages. This native code has the same restrictions as the VM code, but can execute certain operations much more rapidly. This is useful if you're doing heavy computations, digital processing, or even porting existing code bases written in C or C++.
upgrading to this release is highly recommended. It provides the following improvements:
* The ability to use OpenGL ES 1.1 headers and libraries If your application targets Android 1.6, your native code can now directly call OpenGL ES 1.1 functions to perform graphics rendering. This will help those programs that need to send large amounts of vertex data to the GPU. Note, however, that activity lifecycle and surface creation must still be performed from the VM. This NDK contains a new sample ("san-angeles") that shows exactly how to do that with a GLSurfaceView object.
* The ability to target either Android 1.5 or 1.6 devices The NDK parses your project's properties to know which platform release it is targeting. It will then automatically use the proper headers and libraries to generate your native code. Any application that targets 1.5 will run on Android 1.5, Android 1.6 and any future official system release. Targeting 1.6 should, thus, only be done if your application requires new 1.6 features / APIs, like the ability to call OpenGL ES 1.x headers from native code.
* The ability to put your native sources under your application's project tree You can now conveniently place all your sources (C, C++ and Java) under the same tree, for editing or version control purposes.
* Many fixes to the NDK's build scripts The changes to the build scripts fix some annoying bugs and also increase host system compatibility.

Marketing a Show Via Twitter - Next to Normal
Beating out Coca Cola, Star Trek, HBO and Sprint, the musical Next to Normal which began at Arena Stage in Washington, DC and moved on to Broadway, won an OMMA award for its Twitter campaign. The Online Media, Marketing and Advertising Awards are for internet creativity. The promotion was recognized by the MediaPost Group which sponsors the awards.
They used tweets to retell the show's plot by having the various characters advance the plot via short 140 character messages. They were taken from the book written by the show's author, Brian Yorkey. The responses by others has brought about the creation of a new song about tweeting, to be debuted at a future date.
During the campaign, the number of people following the show's messages topped out at 750,000 or so.
The Twitter campaign for "Next to Normal," much buzzed-about due to its unusually large number of followers for a Broadway show, has picked up an OMMA (Online Media, Marketing and Advertising) Award for online marketing.
It didn't hurt that the show's campaign was promoted extensively by Twitter itself to keep new participants involved. The drop out rate at Twitter is very high, at least half, and 30% of its users - according to a recent poll - don't expect it to still be around in a few years. It is all a crap shoot. And as the story below this one indicates, it doesn't stop people from claiming that Twitter is worth a billion dollars. The owners must be tweeting a happy tune.
But I wonder how many tickets this ad campaign sold, and how much the effort actually cost compared to traditional marketing methods.
Now available: Android 1.6 NDK
Today Android 1.6 NDK, release 1 is available for download from the Android developer site.
To recap, the NDK is a companion to the SDK that provides tools to generate and embed native ARM machine code within your application packages. This native code has the same restrictions as the VM code, but can execute certain operations much more rapidly. This is useful if you're doing heavy computations, digital processing, or even porting existing code bases written in C or C++.

This will help those programs that need to send large amounts of vertex data to the GPU. Note, however, that activity lifecycle and surface creation must still be performed from the VM. This NDK contains a new sample ("san-angeles") that shows exactly how to do that with a GLSurfaceView object. - The ability to target either Android 1.5 or 1.6 devices
The NDK parses your project's properties to know which platform release it is targeting. It will then automatically use the proper headers and libraries to generate your native code. The changes to the build scripts fix some annoying bugs and also increase host system compatibility.

Orange offering the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS
Orange offering the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS later this year Its not much of a stretch to imagine these two events are linked, as when Apple chose O2 to exclusively sell the iPhone, the carrier occupied the highest step, now they are set to be replaced by T-Orange, or whatever the name will be, Apple have signed on the dotted line with them, a deal no doubt made easy by Orange already selling the iPhone in France.
The news also comes on the back of rumours O2 would be losing exclusivity when their contract ran out on November, and one can also wonder as to the impact O2s Palm Pre exclusive deal had on their Apple relations.
At this stage, Orange have only released the fact the iPhone will be available with them via their own shops and selected high street partners, with nothing concerning phone pricing, tariffs or the final release date as yet. Its also worth noting that Orange do not mention anything about exclusivity, so expect O2 to still offer the phone for sale too.

HTC Desire just passed the FCC and got its Wi-Fi certification
HTC Desire just passed the FCC and got its Wi-Fi certification (PDF)! none of the documents are particularly revealing, but they do provide reassurance to Verizon customers eagerly awaiting Android that theyll have some options.
HTC wrapped up confidentiality on External Photos, Internal Photos, Test Setup Photos and User Manual that last through December 31st, 2009 ensuring that were left with very little to nibble on.
HTC Desire is not just a series of 2D rectangles and it IS an actual phone we promise. And the little label on the battery might look a little something like this, Meanwhile the Wi-Fi certification is equally as informing pretty much only revealing that the phone has Wi-Fi:
Verizon Wireless Android scene is really starting to pick up steam as the Motorola Sholes aka Motorola Tao also got FCC approval today. Now were awaiting leaks/rumors, an official announcement and of course more info on the Passion and Predator! Keep pumping out the good stuff VZW!

Zipalign: an easy optimization
The Android 1.6 SDK includes a tool called zipalign
that optimizes the way an application is packaged. Doing this enables Android to interact with your application more efficiently and thus has the potential to make your application and the overall system run faster. We strongly encourage you to use zipalign
on both new and already published applications and to make the optimized version availableeven if your application targets a previous version of Android. We'll get into more detail on what zipalign
does, how to use it, and why you'll want to do so in the rest of this post.
In Android, data files stored in each application's apk are accessed by multiple processes: the installer reads the manifest to handle the permissions associated with that application; the Home application reads resources to get the application's name and icon; the system server reads resources for a variety of reasons (e.g. to display that application's notifications); and last but not least, the resource files are obviously used by the application itself.
The resource-handling code in Android can efficiently access resources when they're aligned on 4-byte boundaries by memory-mapping them. But for resources that are not aligned (i.e. when zipalign
hasn't been run on an apk), it has to fall back to explicitly reading themwhich is slower and consumes additional memory.
For an application developer like you, this fallback mechanism is very convenient. It provides a lot of flexibility by allowing for several different development methods, including those that don't include aligning resources as part of their normal flow.
Unfortunately, the situation is reversed for usersreading resources from unaligned apks is slow and takes a lot of memory. In the best case, the only visible result is that both the Home application and the unaligned application launch slower than they otherwise should. In the worst case, installing several applications with unaligned resources increases memory pressure, thus causing the system to thrash around by having to constantly start and kill processes. The user ends up with a slow device with a poor battery life.
Luckily, it's very easy to align the resources:
- Using ADT:
- ADT (starting with 0.9.3) will automatically align release application packages if the export wizard is used to create them. To use the wizard, right click the project and choose "Android Tools" > "Export Signed Application Package..." It can also be accessed from the first page of the
AndroidManifest.xml
editor.
- ADT (starting with 0.9.3) will automatically align release application packages if the export wizard is used to create them. To use the wizard, right click the project and choose "Android Tools" > "Export Signed Application Package..." It can also be accessed from the first page of the
- Using Ant:
- The Ant build script that targets Android 1.6 (API level 4) can align application packages. Targets for older versions of the Android platform are not aligned by the Ant build script and need to be manually aligned.
- Debug packages built with Ant for Android 1.6 applications are aligned and signed by default.
- Release packages are aligned automatically only if Ant has enough information to sign the packages, since aligning has to happen after signing. In order to be able to sign packages, and therefore to align them, Ant needs to know the location of the keystore and the name of the key in
build.properties
. The name of the properties arekey.store
andkey.alias
respectively. If those properties are present, the signing tool will prompt to enter the store/key passwords during the build, and the script will sign and then align the apk file. If the properties are missing, the release package will not be signed, and therefore will not get aligned either.
- Manually:
- In order to manually align a package,
zipalign
is in the tools folder of the Android 1.6 SDK. It can be used on application packages targeting any version of Android. It should be run after signing the apk file, using the following command:zipalign -v 4 source.apk destination.apk
- In order to manually align a package,
- Verifying alignment:
- The following command verifies that a package is aligned:
zipalign -c -v 4 application.apk
- The following command verifies that a package is aligned:
We encourage you manually run zipalign
on your currently published applications and to make the newly aligned versions available to users. And don't forget to align any new applications going forward!
Google Voice iPhone App Breaks the Law, AT&T Launches iPhone MMS
After a long wait AT&T finally rolled out support for the multimedia messaging service (MMS) protocol. This means that iPhones can at last send pictures, video, and audio recordings like users of other smartphones.
IPhones have actually had MMS support built in since June when the iPhone OS v3.0 was released. AT&T, however, kept the functionality disabled for fear it would overload and break its network. Meanwhile, AT&T upgraded much of its network and built extra capacity to handle the service.
On September 22, early last week, it sent a free SMS text message to inform its customers that it would be rolling out the update on Friday. The message read, "AT&T Free Msg: Picture & video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current 'view my message' experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected."
Users began receiving the update when they synced their phones with iTunes on Friday. The update wasn't without its problems -- most of which appear to be software/firmware related. Some users found that their attempts to send MMS failed. Apple and AT&T suggested users first try to reset their networks settings. A more extreme fix involves selecting your iPhone's settings in iTunes and choosing "General > Reset All Settings > enter your pin if prompted". That fix appears to get MMS working, but you may have to reenter your Passcode, Wi-Fi passwords. You may also lose your VPN connections and remembered Wi-Fi networks. A perk, though, is that your apps are arranged alphabetically, something previously not easily done.

Apple Allows iTunes Competitor on App Store
Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller has made it his personal mission to fix the iPhone's App Store. Phil Shoemaker, Apples Director of Application Technology is also playing a hand. Why would the top brass at a company like Apple be having to work so hard to "fix" a wildly successful marketplace that sold over a billion apps? It boils down to one thing -- perception.
Apple has consistently shown inconsistency, approving usenet applications designed to assist in filesharing, while rejecting others that monitor your torrent client. Likewise it rejected Google Voice, while approving a similar app from VoIP service Vonage. Still other controversial apps -- like the infamous "Babyshaker" app -- it approved only to later reject. However, there are some signs that Apple may finally be loosening up when it comes to its app store censorship.
This week Apple approved Spotify Mobile, a European music download service's application. The app will compete directly with iTunes in digital music sales.
In the past, Apple forbade most applications that competed with the handful of applications it offers for the iPhone. It relaxed this restriction slightly, recently allowing rival web browsers -- but only those based on WebKit, the rendering engine Apple's Safari browser uses.
For those interested, Spotify offers 6 million songs on-demand for $16. You can stream songs to your phone, or download songs to listen to when offline.

Free iPhone Porn App Launched by Sunny Leone
We're not up to speed on the finer points of Sunny Leone's work (or at least, we weren't until an eye-popping Google Images search), but we gather she's fairly well known in the adult entertainment world.
Now there's some good news for fans who want to keep up with her doings on their iPhones: yes, there's an app for that. A free one, launched by T3 IT.
This being the app store, it doesn't contain anything that would flout Apple's upper ceiling of a 17+ age rating - the blurb describes it as a "bikini and lingerie model app... although there is no nude picture or video, nudity or pornographic material, the content is very provocative".
Quite. The app offers photo galleries, video clips and Leone's personal blog. A separate paid version has more content for 59p, and T3 IT has launched a similar premium app for another adult star, Aria Giovanni.
Apple has been uncompromising in its no-adult-apps stance for iPhone, but it's interesting to see the adult entertainment world experimenting with tame iPhone apps for promotional purposes in this way.

A Note on Google Apps for Android
Lately we've been busy bees in Mountain View, as you can see from the recent release of Android 1.6 to the open-source tree, not to mention some devices we're working on with partners that we think you'll really like. Of course, the community isn't sitting around either, and we've been seeing some really cool and impressive things, such as the custom Android builds that are popular with many enthusiasts. Recently there's been some discussion about an exchange we had with the developer of one of those builds, and I've noticed some confusion around what is and isn't part of Android's open source code. I want to take a few moments to clear up some of those misconceptions, and explain how Google's apps for Android fit in.
Everyone knows that mobile is a big deal, but for a long time it was hard to be a mobile app developer. Competing interests and the slow pace of platform innovation made it hard to create innovative apps. For our part, Google offers a lot of services such as Google Search, Google Maps, and so on and we found delivering those services to users' phones to be a very frustrating experience. But we also found that we weren't alone, so we formed the Open Handset Alliance, a group of like-minded partners, and created Android to be the platform that we all wished we had. To encourage broad adoption, we arranged for Android to be open-source. Google also created and operates Android Market as a service for developers to distribute their apps to Android users. In other words, we created Android because the industry needed an injection of openness. Today, we're thrilled to see all the enthusiasm that developers, users, and others in the mobile industry have shown toward Android.
With a high-quality open platform in hand, we then returned to our goal of making our services available on users' phones. That's why we developed Android apps for many of our services like YouTube, Gmail, Google Voice, and so on. These apps are Google's way of benefiting from Android in the same way that any other developer can, but the apps are not part of the Android platform itself. We make some of these apps available to users of any Android-powered device via Android Market, and others are pre-installed on some phones through business deals. Either way, these apps aren't open source, and that's why they aren't included in the Android source code repository. Unauthorized distribution of this software harms us just like it would any other business, even if it's done with the best of intentions.
I hope that clears up some of the confusion around Google's apps for Android. We always love seeing novel uses of Android, including custom Android builds from developers who see a need. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
Bursting the Billion Dollar Twitter Bubble
Call it froth, call it sizzle, but don't use more than 140 characters. A billion dollars. That's the value of Twitter according to the esteemed Wall Street Journal, the newspaper of record when it comes to over valuing things from mortgage derivatives to the current story on Twitter's prospects. Wall Street lays another egg. How do you say nineties nonsense?
The investors are valuing Twitter -- which has yet to generate more than a trickle of revenue -- at about $1 billion...The investor group is expected to include mutual-fund giant T. Rowe Price Group Inc. and private-equity firm Insight Venture Partners, which would be new investors to Twitter. Existing Twitter investors, including Spark Capital and Institutional Venture Partners, are also expected to participate in the round, according to the people familiar with the plan.Twitters Value is Set at $1 Billion
We're seen these speculative internet gold rushes before, when IPO's were all the rage in order to monetize some code warrior's sleepless nights of toil creating, say, a website devoted to images of her friend's piercings and tattoos. Of course, theatres, symphonies and other arts presenters have been doing backflips trying to figure out how to get people to tweet short reviews of their productions, not realizing that it is as easy to say "save your money" as it is to encourage friends to "buy a ticket." Besides, the bottom line is it takes more than a few abbreviated words to convince me to attend something. The twitterati have short and shallow attention spans, what with their multi-tasking and everything.
I am a regular visitor to and participant in both Facebook and MySpace (or My Face as my friend Shirley likes to say) and think they are better suited to the future prospects of being adjuncts to arts marketing efforts. Here in the Berkshires just about every cultural group with more than one member is now online, on My Space, and the number of writings on my wall touting this event or that far outnumber those of friends reporting on their baby's diaper condition.
Still, every once in a while somebody posts something really interesting, or novel, and makes it all worthwhile.
But not a billion dollars of worthwhile, no matter what the WSJ says. Let the investors choose their vehicles to ride over their cliffs. Thelma and Louise can do whatever they want to piss away their retirement money. This time let's just not bail them out, ok?

ADC 2 Judging Has Begun!
I am happy to announce that Android Developer Challenge 2's first round of judging has begun!
As a reminder, user voting determines which apps will make it to the second round. Voting will occur through an application called Android Developer Challenge 2, which is now available for download from Android Market. Android Developer Challenge 2 presents apps for each user to download and score according to a set of criteria, such as originality and effective use of the Android platform, among others. The first round of judging will last at least two weeks from today. Judging will continue until we receive a sufficient number of votes to identify the top 20 applications in each of the 10 categories (200 apps total) that qualify for the second round.
During the second round, judging will occur through a combination of user voting and input from a panel of industry experts. User voting will continue to occur via Android Developer Challenge 2 and will account for 40% of the final score that each app receives in round two. The remaining 60% of the final score will be determined by the industry expert panel.
It has been a little less than a year since the first Android-powered phones became available. Today, there are more than 10,000 applications available in Android Market. We are pleased by the energy and commitment demonstrated by developers in such a short period of time. Our goal with Android Developer Challenge 2 is to inspire the developer community to produce even more innovative apps for Android. Now on to the voting!
