Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Nokia 5800i XM just passed through FCC, and all the documents show pretty much the same handset, with similar specs and looks as the original 5800. Except for the Wi-Fi connectivity, which is lacking in Nokia 5800i.
Nokia 5800i update looks rather strange for me. Former Nokia handset upgrades with the i index usually improved the specs and features of the device, while this one, with the removal of Wi-Fi antenna, seems to be a minor downgrade.
On the other hand, the importance of a price in this market segment seems to be pretty significant. And if Nokia wants to have a device closer to XM5530 in price, but still able to take full advantage of Nokia services that need GPS location, Nokia 5800i XM might be that handset.

Nokia N97 launch still ringing
Nokia N97 launch still ringing decrease in dimensions has meant some changes to the slide out QWERTY keyboard, most notably the omission of the four way navigational key on the left of the N97s keyboard. In its place we can clearly see arrow keys that sit in the top right corner of the keyboard. On the reverse of the phone the N97 mini gets a nice slab of metal for a battery cover but unfortunately lacks the sliding lens cover for the camera which (and correct me if im
screen is visibly smaller (though not by that much) resulting in a phone that isnt as wide as its bigger brother but thats about all we can guess from the leaked photos. The appearance of these photos raises more questions than it answers. Why release a phone that is only marginally smaller than its bigger brother? Will Nokia strip out features similar to how they put the 5800 on a diet to create the 5530? Will the N97 Mini still run Symbian? And obviously the biggest question of all, it this phone genuine or an extremely professional fake? Well, for the time being at least, we cant answer any of them. Keep an eye on the Blog over the coming weeks as we hold our breath for an official announcement from Nokia.

iPhone Suicide Victim's Family Paid $52,000, and $4,400/year After
Apple and its Chinese iPhone manufacturer Foxconn made headlines when an employee Danyong Sun committed suicide. The circumstances were anything but ordinary. Mr. Sun had been given a set of never-before-seen iPhone fourth generation prototypes to deliver for testing. He lost one of these prototypes and was subsequently the victim of a burglary and assault, reportedly by his employer's security division. He then committed suicide.
Following initial statements by Foxconn and Apple, new details have emerged. Foxconn has announced that it will pay off the family of Mr. Sun in hopes of laying the matter quietly to rest. It has agreed to pay his parents a lump sum of $52,000 and a yearly payment of $4,400 for the rest of their lives.
The government is still investigating the incident. Apple says it will wait until that investigation finishes before it takes action. The main subject of the investigations is Mr. Gun Qinmin a security supervisor. Mr. Qinmin insists that he's innocent, though he admits to sending people to search Mr. Sun's office.
The average salary of a worker in one of China's cities was 5,000 yuan ($3,560 USD) in 2007.

iPhone can be VERY Dangerous if iPhone is Unlocked
Apple has tried everything to stop iPhone unlockers. Bricking iPhones didn't work -- it just generated more headaches and bad PR. Apple's internal protection technology turned out to be just as weak and poorly implemented as its consumer security on the iPhone -- the hackers quickly overcame the latest protections Apple threw at them. Now with its shiny new iPhone 3G S becoming yet the latest handset to be freed, Apple has turned to none other than the U.S. government for help.
The company has submit a report to the U.S. Copyright Office suggesting that iPhone unlocking be outlawed (and jailbreaking from the AT&T network, essentially as well as it would be impossible without unlocking) as Apple claims it threatens cell phone towers across America. Apple claims that unlocking the iPhone provides easy access to the iPhones BBP the baseband processor software, which enables a connection to cell phone towers.

Baked kibbeh
Delicious traditional Lebanese baked kibbeh recipe.
Preparation Time 40 minutes
Cooking Time 35 minutes
Ingredients (serves 4)
120g (2/3 cup) Naytura Cracked Wheat
400g lamb mince
1 brown onion, coarsely grated
2 tbs chopped fresh mint
1/2 tsp ground allspice
2 tsp toasted pine nuts
1/4 tsp sumac
Olive oil, to grease
Natural yoghurt, to serve
Lebanese bread, to serve
Lemon wedges, to serve
Cucumber salad
4 Lebanese cucumbers, peeled, quartered lengthways, coarsely chopped
4 tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup fresh continental parsley leaves
1 tbs fresh lemon juice
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1 garlic clove, crushed
Method
1. Place cracked wheat in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water. Set aside for 15 minutes. Drain through a fine sieve, pressing to remove excess moisture.
2. Place 350g mince and half the onion in a large bowl. Add the cracked wheat, mint and half the allspice, and season with salt and pepper. Use wet hands to mix until well combined.
3. Cook remaining mince in a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up any lumps, for 2 minutes or until mince changes colour. Add the remaining onion and cook for 2 minutes or until the mince is cooked and the onion is soft. Stir in the pine nuts, sumac and the remaining allspice. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside to cool completely.
4. Preheat oven to 200C. Brush a baking tray with oil to grease. Divide the cracked wheat mixture into 16 even portions. Roll 1 portion into a ball. Holding the ball in the palm of your hand, press your index finger into the centre of the ball to make a cup shape. Place 1 teaspoon of the pine nut mixture in the cavity. Bring the edges together to seal, then roll into a slightly elongated egg shape. Repeat, in 15 more batches, with the remaining cracked wheat mixture and pine nut mixture.
5. Place the kibbeh on the prepared tray. Bake in oven, turning halfway through cooking and brushing occasionally with juices, for 30 minutes or until cooked.
6. Meanwhile, to make the cucumber salad, combine the cucumber, tomato, onion and parsley in a bowl. Whisk together the lemon juice, oil and garlic in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add the lemon dressing to the cucumber mixture and toss to combine.
7. Serve the kibbeh balls with cucumber salad, yoghurt, bread and lemon wedges.
Notes & tips
You can also serve these kibbeh balls as part of a mezze meal, which is a favourite in Lebanon. This "grazing" meal consists of a series of small dishes that are set out for guests to nibble on. Simply halve the size of the kibbeh and reduce the cooking time to 15 minutes. Serve with hummus, baba ghanoush, labne and Lebanese bread for a magnificent meal.
Freezing tip Cool at the end of step 5. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in fridge. Preheat oven to 200C. Place kibbeh on a baking tray in oven until heated through.

AT&T and iPhone -- Exclusivity Might End Soon
No one can deny the business sense that AT&T used when it locked up the iPhone from Apple as an exclusive back in 2007 when the phone first debuted. The iPhone has helped AT&T grow significantly since it debuted.
According to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, the partnership with Apple will inevitably end and ultimately the only differentiator between the wireless providers in America will be network quality. The exclusive agreement between Apple and AT&T is believed to end next year.
In Europe, O2 is facing the same problem as AT&T with its exclusive period ending. Apple is allowing O2 to keep the exclusive on the iPhone 3GS in the UK while opening the iPhone 3G up to other carriers. Reuters reports that AT&T added 1.4 million new subscribers in the second quarter and out of those subscribers about had more than 2.4 million iPhone activation during the quarter.
The prospect of losing the exclusive on the iPhone has to raise eyebrows at AT&T and with Wall Street. Research firm Pali Research issued a sell advisement on AT&T stock in June because it was believed to be losing its iPhone exclusive. At the same time, the research firm issued a buy order on Verizon, believed to be picking the iPhone up on its network.
Pali Research wrote in a report, "Our buy rating on Verizon is based on our view that its market share gains will lead to profit growth that tops other telecom companies and Wall Street consensus estimates. Our sell rating on AT&T is based primarily on our belief that its wireless business will enter a prolonged period of erosion after being propped up by the iPhone for the past two years."

iPhone is "Incredibly Insecure", says Hacker
Jonathan Zdziarski, an iPhone developer and a hacker who teaches forensics courses on recovering data from iPhones, hasn't been very impressed with the iPhone's security -- or lack thereof. Mr. Zdziarski has indicated that iPhone OS v3.0 is a bit better when it comes to security, but he says with only a few pieces of readily available freeware you can easily crack it in under two minutes. That news must be concerning for the corporations and government agencies that support the hundreds of thousands of business iPhones Apple says it has sold.
Mr. Zdziarski says the iPhone's security woes are entirely unnecessary and are the result of incompetence. He states, "It is kind of like storing all your secret messages right next to the secret decoder ring. I dont think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why its hard to describe why its such a big threat to security."
His statements stand in stark contrast with Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook's cheerful news that 20 percent of Fortune 100 companies have purchased 10,000 or more iPhones apiece and that multiple government organizations had purchased 25,000 iPhones apiece. Mr. Cook had bragged, "Were seeing growing interest with the release of iPhone 3.0 and the iPhone 3GS due in part to the new hardware encryption and improved security policies. The phone is particularly doing well with small businesses and large organizations."

Modu Gets Launched
Modu has been developing a tiny handset to work with a range of different peripherals, depending on your needs. Multiple sleeves provide a couple of options for a more traditional phone, but car mount, bike and media centre sleeves will also be options. The especially cool teaser should give you a taste of what this device hopes to do for mobility.
As for the reviewers first impressions, they highlight that the core Modu product is extremely basic (no Wi-Fi or 3G), but the release of new jackets down the line will really determine how far the product goes; if other manufacturers dont pump out their own sleeves, Modu will be stuck with a very small brick that makes phone calls. The lack of a real number pad, touch input, and obscenely tiny size make Modu impractical on its own, so getting at least one sleeve will be something of a necessity. The graphics are pretty dated, apparently, and the majority of the express sleeves arent what youd call stylish.
Modu will be retailing for around $130 locally on Cellcom, which is refunded in full if you fill out a questionnaire - free aint bad for something so experimental. What do you guys think, would Modu fly in North America?
