Apple boldly advertises the slogan "It just works", but Apple has its share of issues just like any other tech company. Among the recent problems included Mac display issues (which have been ongoing for over a year) and iPhone signal issues (also a year old problem).
Now another familiar problem has been reported. Apple's hot new iPhone is not just getting hot figuratively, it's getting hot literally. Reports of Apple's handsets turning toasty and colorizing from white to a toasty brown or rosy pink have been widely reported.
Reportedly, the phones are more likely to overheat when playing games or using the GPS. The iPhone 3G S packs a much faster CPU and graphics processor than its predecessor, a likely source of the heating issues. However, Apple thus far has denied the reports and refused to comment that there is a problem with the handsets.

Samsung VICE, LG Rumour 2 now Available on Virgin
Virgin has two new QWERTY-equipped handsets for you folks out there, the Samsung VICE and the LG Rumour 2. First introduced by Bell in Canada, the Virgin Samsung VICE retails for just $79.99 on a 3-year contract, $129.99 for 2-years, and $149.99 on a single year plan or prepaid. As a quick refresher, the Samsung VICE comes with a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, GPS, and a jog wheel for music navigation apart from its slide-out full QWERTY keypad.
Meanwhile, the Virgin LG Rumour 2 is selling much cheaper at $49.99 on a 3-yr contract, $99.99 on a 2-year plan, and $129.99 for a single year or on prepaid. With a less impressive feature set which includes a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and 2.5mm headphone jack, its really no surprise that this one retails for much less than the Samsung Vice. Paris 1890 Unlaced! at Ventfort Hall, Lenox, MA

Kevin Sprague photos.
There was a full house for the Opening Night performance and Reception for Paris, 1890, Unlaced at Ventfrot Hall Mansion and Museum of the Gilded Age. The play was commissioned by Ventfort Hall from playwright and author Juliane Hiam and features the marvelous Anne Undeland in multiple roles. Sarah Taylor, formerly of Shakespeare & Company, directed. For more information please go to http://www.gildedage.org. Most of the wonderful photos are by Kevin Sprague, who seems to have become the documentarian for theatrical history in the Berkshires.
Juliane Hiam who wrote the play was able to travel back in time and conjures up the memories of a young courtesan from the era when the Eiffel Tower was built. It was the period in which Monet, Renoir, Degas and Toulouse-Latrec walked the streets of Paris and frequented the nightclubs. 1890 was the year that Debussy composed Claire de Lune. It was a very different time, one of sexual repression but in Paris, things were already becoming more modern. The 1890's are also when the first playwrights began writing realistic theatre, the plays of Ibsen, Shaw, and yes, even Feydeau that are the foundation of modern theatre.

Anne Undeland captures the Belle poque in her characterizations of the four or five women we meet in the play. They were known as The Grand Horizontals. I can not help but wonder if the customers were called The Grand Verticals. Or possible the Petite Perpendiculars.
In mid-nineteenth-century France, frigid and frail was fashionable. The perfect woman was timid, submissive, and lacked "sexual feeling of any kind." Just when it seemed that it was possible to keep women quiet and under control, the Grand Horizontals appeared. These famous courtesans wreaked havoc in Paris for almost twenty years. They were relentless hedonists in the true sense of the word: they loved pleasure, money, and mastered the art of seduction.
Each afternoon at 5pm they rolled through town in custom carriages while mobs of flustered onlookers watched from the sidelines. The tabloids recorded their adventures in details: "masked balls, dinners of peacock galantine, and preposterous stunts." From The Fact Box Blog

At the performance I attended, there were five women for every man there, perhaps to learn a few tricks, or for pure historical background. It did seem to me that in delivering her performance, Anne Undeland engaged her audience directly, fixing her gaze on each and every person seated there, drawing them in - seducing them, even - into her world of pleasure. Many members of the audience had smiles on their faces throughout the show. As much as it is a testament to the power of a good performance, it also speaks volumes about seduction and sexual attraction.
The play keeps moving thanks to the swift pacing of director Sarah Taylor, and brings to light an intriguing mystery featuring five women all performed by Ms. Undeland: Juliette, a contemporary Gilded Age Museum director, La Crme, an infamous Parisian courtesan; Hettie, the wife of La Crmes benefactor; La Chapellier, a very talkative milliner; Gertrude, an American innocent abroad; and finally, The Virgin, a flash-in-the-pan celebrity in the Montmarte nightclub scene singer, dancer, aspiring courtesan. In Citizen Kane style, as we hear from each successive character, we come a little closer to solving the mystery around which the entire play is constructed.

My friend and colleague Gail Burns has written a marvelous review and overview of this play at Gail Sez. It's a historic and fun look at this from the woman's perspective. Paris 1890 Unlaced plays until September 6, 2009 and if you are the least bit interested in this period of history, or in how incredibly magnetic these courtesans were, you should not miss this play. It runs just over an hour without any intermission, and tickets are $22.00. Yes, it is slightly risqu.

You can reserve tickets by calling 413.637.3206 or visiting http://www.gildedage.org Ventfort Hall is located at 104 Walker Street, Lenox, MA 01240 but keep alert, they are set back in the woods, and their street entrance sign is tiny.

Motorola VE440 Cadbury Leaked
Motorola Cadbury, codename VE440, has successfully passed the certification of Bluetooth SIG. Motorola VE440 Cadbury is not a smartphone. Its a CDMA handset that apparently has low-end features. The website published photograph of the device - a classic single digital keyboard. But surely, the phone supports a wireless interface Bluetooth.
Chances are the Motorola VE440 will arrive via Verizon or Sprint in the US, although there is no definite release date yet.

Apple's problems, like history, seem to have a way of repeating themself. The iPhone 3G S launch, like the 3G launch of a year before brought more crashed servers and more unhappy customers. And just this last week Mac Pro users began to experience display problems with their new computers, echoing problems that have been reported for a couple years in various models. Now iPhone users are reporting reception and signal problems that echo the iPhone 3G's problems last year that were eventually traced to/blamed on faulty chipset firmware.
MacWorld's Ted Landau reports that his own research with his 3G and 3G S phones revealed that the 3G S is perplexing switching to the slower EDGE networks, while the iPhone 3G shows no problems accessing the faster 3G networks.
Apple claims that this actually shows that its hardware is working better. Writes Mr. Landau, "Checking online, I found others reporting a similar situation. So I contacted Apple Support for an explanation. They said they were familiar with this matter and that there was nothing wrong. At least not with my iPhone 3GS. According to Apple, the software behind the status bar on an iPhone 3GS does a better job of showing when a switch from 3G to EDGE has occurred than does the comparable software on an iPhone 3G."
Apple Support claims that increased traffic is to blame for the 3G S switching to EDGE when the 3G has a high (four or five bar) signal strength. Apple also claims that it switches users to EDGE first who have been connected to 3G for the longest.

Sexy iGirl iPhone App Funds a Startup
You can't really take iGirl seriously. It's a goofy (with an emphasis on sad and borderline creepy) iPhone app featuring a pasty-looking, scantily-clad virtual girlie that you can customize according to your...ahem...interests. "We get e-mail complaints from conservatives that think [iGirl] is too perverted while kids complain that there's no nudity," says Resistor Productions CEO, Toby Battan. But that 99-cent joke helped kick-start a company and fund a new MMO (massively multiplayer online) fighting game, Disciple.
In the past, I've spoken with a homebrew coder who built games on the side, but Battan's story is a little different. He's a serial entrepreneur who got tired of courting venture capitalists in pursuit of his browser-based fantasy fighter (and I'll get to that game in a few seconds, promise). "I loathed having to go around to VCs asking for money," says Battan.
Obviously the economy is hurting and people aren't as quick to part with piles of cash as they once were, but he paints a funny scenario: "It used to be that they'd invest if they saw a good plan on paper. Now VCs want to see a company that's profitable before they invest.... Why would I come back when I'm already profitable?" In the end, it's a painful six-month-plus process just to get money with a whole bunch of strings attached.

On Cellphones, Blackberries, Theatre Etiquette

If the President of the United States can manage to make it through a 2-hour theatre-going experience without disturbing his fellow theatregoers with his much-beloved Blackberry, then *anyone* should be able to do the same.
That said, it should have been the house management enforcing the ban. That same blue light that annoys nearby patrons should be readily visible to any relatively attentive ushers.
In the Berkshires, this is not much of a problem since people seem to be a bit more civilized, and the volunteer ushers are sitting right there, with the audience.

Tony-nominee John Tillinger directs this timeless Gurney classic set in a large summer home on an island off the coast of Massachusetts. When an estranged brothers return and a mothers impending marriage recall painful memories of their fathers death, seething arguments reignite one familys struggle with its tragic past and uncertain future.

Are you ready? The question looms over Jerry as the months tick by and his unborn son grows from the size of a peach to the size of, well, a baby. As the birth date creeps ever nearer, will the advice, encouragement and warnings of friends and family make Jerry more or less ready? The awe and terror of becoming a new parent shines through Shermans newest play as he examines whether one can ever truly be ready for parenthood. Artistic Director Nicholas Martin directs this world premiere.
With Brooks Ashmanskas, Peter Dinklage, Bob Dishy, Rightor Doyle, Annie Parisse, Susan Pourfar, Reg Rogers.

There is a new and exclusive interview of Nicholas Martin in Berkshire Fine Arts which reveals that his directorial and artistic magic touch is still a much sought after commodity on Broadway, despite the stroke he suffered last fall. Theatre people never slow down, they just soldier on.

Apple Makes Over $400 Profit per 16 GB IPhone, $500 per 32 GB Model
Apple has reportedly the world's strongest brand image, and yet manages to maintain some of the industry's largest profit margins, a rare achievement. Now that the iPhone bill of materials (BOM) for the iPhone 3G S has been divined thanks to an iSuppli tear down, it appears that Apple has another business success story on its hands with the iPhone 3G S.
The hot new phone's components cost $172.46, for the 16 GB model, according to Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst, teardown services, for iSuppli. The most expensive component is the 16 GB of NAND flash memory, produced by Toshiba and estimated to cost $24/unit. Least expensive is the audio codec chip, which costs a mere $1.15/unit, produced by Cirrus Logic.
The phone costs approximately $6.50 to assemble, bringing the estimate cost to $178.96/phone.
The 16 GB iPhone 3G S costs $599.99 for returning customers with less than a year on their contract, and as little as $199.99 for new customer or returning customers with 2 years on their contract. However, according to reports, Apple sells the iPhones to AT&T at approximately $600 per phone, and the carrier provides the discount. Apple is also rumored to get a small cut of the subscription fees.
States Mr. Rassweiller, "Although the retail price of the 16GB iPhone 3GS is $199, the same as for the 8GB version of the original iPhone 3G, the actual price of the phone paid by the service provider is considerably higher, reflecting the common wireless industry practice of subsidizing the upfront cost of a mobile phone and then making a profit on subscriptions."

Introducing Android 1.5 NDK, Release 1
Many of you have been asking for the ability to call into native code from your Android applications. I'm glad to announce that developers can now download the Android Native Development Kit from the Android developer site.
As you know, Android applications run in the Dalvik virtual machine. The NDK allows developers to implement parts of these applications using native-code languages such as C and C++. This can provide benefits to certain kinds of applications.
The NDK provides:
- a set of tools and build files used to generate native code libraries from C and C++ sources
- a way to embed the corresponding native libraries into application packages files (.apks) that can be deployed on Android devices
- a set of native system headers and libraries that will be supported in all future releases of the Android platform, starting from Android 1.5 documentation, samples and tutorials
This release of the NDK supports the ARMv5TE machine instruction set and provides stable headers for:
- libc, the standard C library
- libm, the standard math library
- the JNI interface
- libz, the common ZLib compression library
- liblog, used to send logcat messages to the kernel
Keep in mind that using the NDK will not be relevant for all Android applications. As a developer, you will need to balance its benefits against its drawbacks, which are numerous! Your application will be more complicated, have reduced compatibility, have no access to framework APIs, and be harder to debug. That said, some applications that have self-contained, CPU-intensive operations that don't allocate much memory may still benefit from increased performance and the ability to reuse existing code. Some examples are signal processing, intensive physics simulations, and some kinds of data processing.
For any questions on the NDK, please join the Android NDK forum.
Have fun.
Adult IPhone Apps Approved for the First Time, Then Yanked
It took the Baby Boom generation to revolutionize America's views on sexuality, and it looks like it took three iPhone generations to accomplish a similar transformation. In what some are hailing as the end of Apple App Store censorship, Apple has allowed a vibrator app and a pornographic app to enter the holy ground of its App Store.
Previous apps had offered softer content, showing somewhat provocative pictures of models in swimsuits. The new app, though is the first to show nudity. It definitely falls under the NSFW category.
The app is rate 17+ for "frequent/intense sexual content or nudity" and "frequent/intense mature/suggestive theme". According to the developer, "We uploaded nude topless pics today. This is the first app to have nudity."
Apple decided to tolerate the new apps, reportedly, due to the new parental controls in the iPhone OS v3.0. With the entrance of such apps into the App Store, many are predicting that Apple's censorship of such "offensive" adult applications such as the Me-So-Holy app and the South Park app will be forced to end.
Update 1 (Thu Jun 25, 1:23 PM): It appears that Apple may have reversed its decision after the wave of popularity, though no official word has come yet. The app is currently not available in the app store, according to users.
Update 2 (Thu Jun 25, 1:30 PM): The developer's webpage states that the App wasn't whacked by Apple, but rather was temporarily taken down as the overwhelming popularity placing too much strain on the image server. They promise the app will pop back up soon, complete with nudity.

Nokia N97 and N86 8MP in stock now!
Well the wait is finally over, two of the most important phones in Nokias history have now launched and are in stock at Mobiles.co.uk. The N97 is Nokias attempt to take back some of the market share lost to new kids on the block Apple and the ever more impressive Samsung, both of whom have released successful touchscreen mobile phones. Nokia have been slow to join the touchscreen revolution (the 5800 and a few internet tablets are their only touchscreen releases to date) but with consumers falling over themselves to get in on the touchscreen action, Nokia simply couldnt lie down anymore. Meanwhile, the Nokia N86 8MP is the long awaited (and perhaps overdue) 8.0 Megapixel camera phone from Nokia, the companies first. But, with Apple once again dominating with its newly released update, the iPhone 3GS, and several manufacturers moving on to 12 Megapixel camera phones, is it too late for the N97 and N86 8MP?
On the face of things, the N97 doesnt bring that much new to the party. Touchscreen phones dominate the market, 5.0 Megapixel cameras are somewhat out of date and the Symbian operating system is hardly hot property in the wake of the young upstarts such as the iPhones OSX and Googles Android platform. So can the N97 still make an impact? Nokia certainly think so. The focus for the N97 is that it claims to bring the internet to your phone like no other. The new Symbian home screen allows you to add customisable shortcuts (or widgets) to the homescreen. Again this is nothing new, but the potential for this is demonstrated in the Facebook app. The Facebook widget sits on your homescreen and will let you log in with a few taps. Once logged in, the app continues to run, notifying you of a new message, telling you when youve been poked or tagged in a photo and letting you change your status.
Thats not all; take a photo with the 5.0 Megapixel camera and you can upload it straight to your Facebook page, tag friends and post comments. Put simply, the Facebook experience on the N97 is as close to using it on a PC that youll find anywhere and this is just one of the apps. The addition of a hardware QWERTY keyboard compliments web browsing as it gives you flexibility. You can use the touchscreen on its own for one handed web browsing, or open up the keyboard for faster text input whilst still having full access to the touchscreen to scroll and navigate web pages. Take a look online and youll find plenty of iPhone fans crying out for a QWERTY keyboard so for those people, the N97 is a natural choice. The comparisons with the iPhone continue with the huge 32GB internal memory, though Nokia gain the victory with the option to expand it further. The biggest area that could make or break the N97 is in the Apps department and with this in mind, Nokia have completely revamped their download service and released the Ovi Store, youre one stop shop for Symbian applications. Can it take on the App store and, on a broader scale, the iPhone itself? Only time will tell, but the N97 certainly has the tools to do so.
As for the N86, it is without question that Nokia are late to the 8.0 Megapixel party but have they missed it completely or are they just fashionably late? Nokia will argue that they waited to launch an 8.0 Megapixel camera phone until they were confident that they could master the technology and, in turn release the best 8.0 Megapixel camera phone, not just another also ran. The N86 gets off to a good start as the first phone to feature variable aperture levels which lets users alter the amount of light the lens lets in. This kind of technology is usually reserved to Digital SLRs so its inclusion in a phone is impressive. From sample photos weve seen (and taken) the N86 seems to perform admirably in low light conditions and bright daylight. The N86 8MP also a 28mm wide angle lens which lets you get even more into a photo.
Apart from the impressive camera, the N86 8MP also plans to take on the recent wave of gaming centric mobile phones thanks to full support for the Ngage gaming platform and the popular dual slide design which comfortably transforms the phone into a handheld games console. Support for the Ovi Store should provide a never ending supply of Ngage compatible games ranging from simple card and puzzle games to the latest releases including the new Transformers: ROTF movie tie in and WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2009. The N86 8MP also provides refuge for those of you in the market for a new phone who want top of the range features simply dont want a touchscreen device (you know who you are).

Samsung S8000 Jet
The Samsung S8000 Jet is a touchscreen phone that has an easy-to-use interface that positions it between a smartphone and a simple phone.
The user interface is called Touchwiz 2.0 which has a few industry first features mixed in. One of those features is a 6 sided cube which acts as the menu (Launcher) system although it is very similar to the LG Arenas cube interface. It is activated by pushing a button on the phone and then you use gestures to rotate the cube to the menu system you want. The user interface is also motion based and allows you to tilt the phone in various directions to access certain functions such as speed dial.
Smart Unlock is another interesting feature. What that does is puts a group of letters on the screen. When you unlock your phone you press one of the letters at the same time and a specific feature is accessed. You can set up what letter does what through the phones configuration. Four home screens can be configured on the Samsung Jet and each of the four screens is fully customisable allowing you to group icons where you want them.
The screen on the S8000 Jet measures 3.1? and is a WVGA AMOLED touchscreen that has a 400 x 800 pixel resolution. An 800MHz Processor powers the phone which provides enough power to make the browser very quick. The browser supports flash, allows you to open up 5 web pages at once as well as downloading multiple files simultaneously.
On to connectivity it has HSDPA, Wi-fi, GPS and Bluetooth which is nothing new and fairly standard on many phones these days. The GPS unit on the phone works along with 3D map navigation software named Samsung Mobile Navigator. 2GB of built in memory can be found on the phone and as can be expected, a microSD slot is also provided which accepts cards up to 16GB in capacity.
A 5 megapixel digital camera is included on the phone that also has the usual blink detection, image stabilisation and auto-focus that we can expect on an advanced phone. Mixed with the GPS you can also Geo-tag your pictures too. The phones camera can capture video at 30 frames per second with a respectable resolution of 720 x 480 pixels. Lowering the resolution allows you to capture at a higher speed for slow motion shots.
The Samsung S8000 Jet is an impressive looking phone and as it has the features of a smartphone but sits between advanced and simple phones it could be just right for those not looking for something too difficult to use.

iPhone Hack Enables MMS on iPhone OS 3.0
Some folks had figured out a simple hack to enable tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 without the need to jailbreak their iPhone.
In case you didn't know, Aaron Krill over at Krillr.com has also figured out a way to enable MMS on iPhone OS 3.0.
Before you start, you need the following things:
- Modified version of ATT_US.ipcc which can be download from this link.
- iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0
- iTunes 8.2
- Another AT&T Phone (not an iPhone)
You then need to enable IPCC updates for iTunes 8.2 and copy the IPCC file to your iPhone.

Users love the iPhone, but IT does not. The biggest complaints: The iPhone can't be managed for security and access policies like a BlackBerry can. Businesses can buy a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or Motorola Good for Enterprise server to manage user profiles over the air, ensuring that users conform to password policies, encryption policies, app-installation restrictions, and so on, as well as have their e-mail, VPN, and other settings preconfigured to reduce hands-on deployment effort.
For some time now, Apple's offered its free iPhone Configuration Utility for Windows and Mac that lets IT set up and install configuration profiles on iPhones in BlackBerry-like breadth. But it doesn't provide the over-the-air reach, the granularity of control, or the visibility that BlackBerry Enterprise Server offers. Lacking these key needs of larger businesses, iPhone Configuration Utility has been dismissed as a toy application.

iTrivia: Five free iPhone/iPod apps to know your facts
If you're a trivia addict and have some time you need to kill, the App Store at Apple has more than enough trivia apps to meet your needs. Most are reasonably priced at around 99 cents to $1.99 and there are lots of categories including science, space and the United States.
If you're type who just likes random trivia, there are also several free apps that provide a nice range of trivia. I've listed them in order of what I think are the best to the worst. If you like to fill your iPhone and iPod Touch, then get them all. If you're just looking for one, this may help you pick the one that will make you happy.
FACTS
Mark Montecalvo
PROS: This was my favorite of the apps based on the fact that it separates its trivia into nine categories, so you can choose depending on what you're in the mood for. It has a smaller font, but is still easy to read. One button let's you choose if you want to move in sequence or randomly. Moving to the next fact only takes a tap of the picture on the screen.
CONS: The pictures take up half the screen, sacrificing the chance to make the words larger and they are pointless since they never relate to the trivia. A fact about Ewan McGregor was accompanied by a picture of a baby. That same baby also appears on other facts. If the app dropped the pictures and bumped up the font size, it would be perfect.
There are two apps in the store named Facts. This one has a button with a light bulb in in.
PROS: 6,001 facts that each have a number, so you know how far you've progressed through the list. This app also allows you to save your favorites to look back or share with others. It has a fairly large font that isn't too difficult to read. Two buttons make it easy to move forward and backward through the trivia and you also have the option to go through them randomly.
CONS: Once you hit the "Random" button, you have no hope back of getting to a specific fact. You have to keep hitting random until you get near or go forward or backward from there. Facts are written on a chalkboard graphic, so it has a matching font. If you're opposed to comic-book type fonts, you won't like this.
An ad-free version is available for 99 cents. The paid version is also updated with more facts to take you beyond the 6,001 mark.
